If anyone on this discussion list has a degree at any level in sociology, can you tell me if you actually get opportunities to practice sociology (social research, etc.) or are you confined to secondary areas, like doing marketing research, that sort of thing?

A bachelor's degree in sociology is a good starting point for applying to graduate school (MSW, MA, MBA, LLB). Unless you plan on earning a master's and PhD in sociology, I suggest that you look at a teaching degree such as a M.A.T. or a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies to give your career a boost.
Otherwise, you may find your career options restricted to market research, telemarketing and social services.
    best regards,

Sociology is a non-professional field but like others have suggested, a degree in Sociology could open several doors for you in the future. Besides using it as an entry degree to MSW and JD, you may also use a Socialogy degree to secure gainful employments in both the public (govenment agencies) and the private sector.

    Ike,

I think there are thousands upon thousands of sociologists who would tell you they are in deed professionals, and their field is quite a professional area of specialization (and sub-specializations).

I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I think what Ike meant was that Sociology isn't a "professional field" where one usually earns a very focused, title-specific graduate degree like a JD, MBA, MSW, MD, etc.....

I have to agree with Ike. A sociology degree, if used as an entry degree to other professional degrees, will open some doors. The degree alone won`t promise very much. I decided to pursue an MBA after earning an MA in sociology. I had far more job offers with the MBA than with the sociology MA.

In my case, it enabled me to get my alternative teaching certification and pursue work as a teacher as well as enter an administration program.

so all these views point to the fact that a sociology degree is a stepping stone to greater opportunity.
