What surprised me in the doctorate article was that Capella employs him and he mentors doctoral students. Is this another case of not checking credentials?

    I don't get it

If you are going to go to all the trouble to write a valid dissertation as Callegos claims he did, why not do it at a reputable school? There a lot of schools where you could design your own degree and, in fact, that is what you are doing really when you pick your dissertation topic. As they say, this doesn't pass the common sense test.

    This is a dangerous trend

It’s too bad that Capella University does a very poor job with respect to verification of faculty credentials. A couple of years ago, we learned that one of the professors at Capella listed a doctorate from LaCross University, another phony school. It’s even worse to learn that faculty members with questionable credentials are routinely allowed to supervise doctoral dissertations. This is a dangerous trend. With the preceding statements in mind, I wonder what will happen if a university discovers after several years has passed that one of its professors who has supervised several doctoral dissertations and has graduated many PhDs, has a fake or questionable PhD. What will happen to the professor's past advisees?
    1. Can the school nullify degrees that have already been awarded to these students?
    2. Can the school require these students to conduct new researches and subsequently write new dissertations?

    Chris,

You make an excellent point. He could have at least followed a research doctorate at a GAAP foreign school which would have been much better than Columbus.

Re: This is a dangerous trend

I don't think a degree would be nullified as the degree was awarded and backed by Capella not the faculty member/advisor. However, I think that the accreditors would have a field day with this and force some clean-up of the faculty and the faculty selection process.

I wonder whether the bogus degree was even considered by Capella in hiring this individual. In my own case, I was hired as an adjunct (not by Capella but by a large state uni) and my credentials were indeed verified. Subsequently, I received a note from an admin asking me to complete a web form with my bio. AFAIK, this bio was never verified, but is simply presented verbatim on the university web-site. So the faculty bio does not necessarily reflect the credentials considered when the individual was hired.

A doctorate is required to supervise a doctoral dissertation. The person in question listed no other doctorate other than the one from Columbus University.

I agree. It is high time they started cleaning up their faculty selection process.
