What are the benefits of a GA position?

I have been thinking about applying for a GA position with TUI if I apply for the PhD program. I realize that they are not accepting new students but I thought if I apply as a GA, I would have something to offer and would get accepted.

Anyway, what are the benefits of being a GA besides reduced tuition?
Would it look good on my resume when I apply for an adjunct position at a community college?

    Thanks

I applied for an adjunct position that required teaching experience, and the university accepted my graduate teaching assistantship for purposes of meeting this requirement. Teaching assistantships are mandatory in many (most?) face-to-face graduate schools.
