I am thinking about taking the MS in Criminal Justice DL program from Boston University. The reason why I would like to take the degree is mostly for personal enchantment, and I really like the reputation that BU has. However I don't plan on ever working in the law enforcement field so I don't think this degree will be any use to me in terms of my career. Although I was wondering if a person has their bachelor and master degree from a 3rd tire school, would a masters degree from a great school like BU still increase their chances of getting a job they want, even if the job is not in the law enforcement field?

    HAPPY 2004!!!

well sure you can try obtaining different degrees. people in 30s (like me), 40s and above usually dont have the resources to do it.

Boston University is a great school, but keep in mind that the online CJ program is fiercely expensive (I believe $2000+ per course).

I posted a fairly comprehensive list of graduate CJ programs in this thread. IMO, there are better, more cost-effective options available.

I also wonder what utility would a CJ degree give to folks in Canada ? Can you practice some sort of law enforcement in Canada with a US degree ? are the contents of a US degree same that would be taught in a Canadian degree with a Canadian CJ perspective ? what law enforcement can you practice with this degree ? I mean what kind of a job can you get with that ?

That, of course, depends on what program you're talking about. Most of the courses in my M.A. program (Criminological Theory, Statistics, Advanced Research Methods, Foundations of CJ Scholarship, Victimology, Child Maltreatment...you get the idea) would be just as relevant in Canada as the United States.

The only courses I took that wouldn't translate well were Constitutional Law (an elective) and Administration of Justice, which focused on the U.S. justice system.

I have noticed that a lot of the community colleges in Ontario have teaching positions open for people MA/MS in CJ. So I guess if you want you could go into teaching at community college.

I'm assuming that your original question was "Although I was wondering if a person has their bachelor and master degree from a 3rd tire school, would a masters degree from a great school like BU still increase their chances of getting a job they want, even if the job is not in the law enforcement field?"

There are so many variables in that question, that it makes it impossible to answer. Boston University is a great school overall.

However, there are many more options available that might be better and/or cost effective.

    Dear Friends,

I have gained admission to Boston University's metropolitan College For 'Master of Science in Administrative Studies concentration in Financial Economics' program for Fall 2012.
I am 22 yrs old and have completed my Bachelor's in Computer Engineering ,Mumbai
    I have a few questions :-

    1. What are the credentials of METROPOLITAN COLLEGE in general ?

    2. Since BU is a very Expensive school(84 grand tution fees for 2 yrs) ,what are the job prospects after completing my MS in BOSTON or the USA in general after this particular degree?

Would be Grateful for your suggestions and Opinions guys !
