Hello, I am curious if any members have been able to get a professional certificate through the FEMA EMI credits. I am looking for a situation that would compile the credits and would be resume worthy. Ideas and leads appreciated. Hille

    Still waiting

Hi, I completed all the required courses for that certificate and have yet to receive it. It's been a couple of months now.

I'll post here when I do.

    FEMA-EMI Certificates

    Hille:

FEMA-EMI offers two "professional certificates" mainly for emergency/disaster people as a means to "professionalize" the field. These are the (PDS) Professional Development Series certificate and the (APS) Advanced Professional Series certificate. You have to request these through your state emergency management agency training office. The state training office then forwards your request to FEMI-EMI and the certificate is signed by EMI, the state emergency coordinator, and the state training officer. It took me about a month to get my PDS certificate after I requested it. You have to provide copies of each course certificate to the state training officer.

As of now the PDS can be completed totally by independent study courses offered through FEMA-EMI. The APS can only be completed in residence at EMI or by taking FEMA-EMI "G" series classroom courses through your state emergency management agency. Both are excellent resume material, but not many people have an APS certificate since many of the classes for it are new or still being developed. I have completed seven of ten classes needed for the APS.

You can find a wealth of information on the FEMA-EMI webpage about the PDS, APS, and the FEMA higher education project.

    Hope I was of help.

I took quite a few courses through FEMA for disater prep, etc., and recieved certificates for all the courses I took. I do recall that there is a local community college that will grant 3 sh or so for each course taken, in Maryland I believe but I am likely incorrect, I can find out if you are interested.

Having worked many years in Voluntary Agencies in emergency management, I know that these EMI IS courses have some value and validity in that world.

Does this training have any financial value in industry outside the world of Emergency Management? The comment "resume worthy" has me wondering whether this training has real application outside EM...

If you were working in the Environmental Safety or Public Health fields, I think these courses would help brighten up your resume.
