    All,
I'm "writing from Austria" and I'm interested in 100% DL PhD studies. Now I've found Northcentral Uni. and I had a first telefon contact with one of the advisors.
I wonder if someone knows how long it will take incl. disseration. I've a Masters degree from an Austrian Uni and a MBA from Webster.
My learning style and time is average, I think.

    Any information is appreciated. thanks

Ach! There hasn't been an NCU flame war since...well, before Christmas. A search on
NCU may be informative if dismaying.

If you take all 27 courses (one course at a time) x 12 weeks/course = approx 6.2 years.

I don't know how many course credits they require but that part should be pretty easy to calculate. I'm assuming that you're working full-time and so you'll only be able to take 1 or 2 courses at a time. Once you get to the dissertation it becomes more difficult to calculate as some people come more prepared than others in terms of having already selected a topic, done some preliminary research, etc. not to mention the ABD blues that sometimes descend on people. If you're relatively well-prepared for the dissertation then I'd say you've got to give it at least a full year beyond the coursework period.

    Thanks,
some replies weren't so informative as I thought, but valuable additional information.

I have been working with a couple of my employees who are interested in the NCU doctorate. After several conversations, we estimate that it could be completed in 3-4 years if you already have a master's degree and if you stay on task with continuous enrollment. It can obviously take longer.

Oooops - NCU courses are 16 weeks in length so it would take around 8 years with no transfer ceredits and taking one course at a time.

Maybe if you ask NCU they will be able to better define the time frame for you.

I need to take 8 courses plus dissertation. Started in September 2002. I just done my 5th course. I am planning to have the 8th couse completed by next July. (I only have one writing project(4units) and two electives (4units each) to go). as far as the dissertation, I figured that it will take 12 to 18 months to finish. I only take one course at a time and it usually take me 12 weeks to complete each course. Yes, it can be done within 3 years if you already have an appropriate master degree.

    Northcentral University = NCU

You're a doctoral student at Northcentral University? Interesting. :)
Ah, you've been in NCU's doctoral program for 15 months now. :)
Good luck in your "doctoral studies" at NCU. :)

Thanks to this forum I will be starting NCU very soon. Need to take LS6010 first. I am looking at taking one of these next:

    ECM5001 - E-Commerce for Entrepreneurs

    MGT5013 - Entrepreneurship

    Any experience with either?

    @ levi.a:

I truly ask myself why you even consider NCU?

It will not be too likely that you will be allowed an NCU PhD as "Dr." (rer soc oec) in Austria - be aware of that fact ("Nostrifizierung")!

Why don´t you just do your PhD in Austria? It costs FAR less, and can be done in 3-4 years part-time (there´s just about 5 seminars to complete as coursework during the same time).
And ANY Austrian state university PhD degree will be "worth" more in Europe than a middle-class US school degree!

Besides, Australian or even South African schools would also be FAR chaper, and easier to be recognised in the EU!

If you´d like to talk a little more about that topic, feel free to contact me!

    Greets,
    Trigger

(who is attending PhD studies in Austria contemporarily and doing a (second) Master´s degree via DL in Australia at the same time!)

Austria and Australia. Does that make you the ultimate Austauschstudent?

Wait, there's something here about oysters too. I need a better language dictionary.

    ;)

Your language dictionary is perfectly fine,
I am German, study in Germany, AND live and study in Austria AND in Australia... - that should make me quite a good Austauschstudent, right? (though I´m not really on exchange, but just completing my MBA in Germany where only the Thesis is missing, while at the same time doing a PhD in Austria and a Master of Management in Australia via DL - you see that works even over 3 different countries...)

(btw: the very best language dictionary German<->English in the world is THIS ONE: http://dict.leo.org/?lang=de )

I refuse to comment on hillbilly grammar...

    You didn't catch it?

I was simply sharing my joy that he will be able to complete his "doctoral studies." ;)

I tried to be subtle by quoting him directly. What do you think of his verbatum quotes?

And he was accepted into their "doctoral program"? It sounded more like the quality of some of our remedial students in 7th grade.

But I won't engage in an Ad Hominem attack against that poster, just to make a point. Alas, that is all I can say. :)

You won't? You already have!! I admit his message didn't appear to be grammatically appealing to the eyes when I read it; however I am sure he wasn't under the impression that he was being graded for grammer here (I know I can't write a descent sentence if my life depended on it.. shoot, there are some posters that write stuff so bad it makes my teeth hurt when I read it).

He wasn't defending the school, he was merely helping the original poster out by giving him an idea of how long the program takes to complete. You nitpicked his "hill-billy" grammer and tell him good luck w/ his "doctoral" studies (that is plain childish). If the guy decided on NCU and has started his studies (and is not complaining) then maybe it works for him. I understand you want to educate all the new posters about how bad NCU is; but, for the love of God, do NOT start another 120 post thread on this topic.

    Best Regards,
    Bill

Real classy. I must have missed that poll. What was it? Vote for your favorite socially acceptable epithet?

Mr. Liu also states that he has an MBA, JD, and has passed the California Bar Exam.
