What are the chances of getting a good teaching appointment with a DL PHD ? I plan to go in to a phd programe and am confused because I talked to one of my former teachers who has a DL degree from Union Institute. She told me that it is almost impossibe to get a teaching appointment in a traditional university . Please enlighten me

I think almost impossible is about right. Certainly there have been exceptions and there will continue to be exceptions, but acceptability by Academia is lagging the rest of the world. That will change, but not this week.

However, all things being equal, prestige still carries some weight. The doctorate in adult education at Columbia University can probably get you numerous interviews. You're going to have to work harder with with the doctorate from Nova Southeastern.

Whether you can actually land the job is a different story and goes into what you have done with your life besides study. For example, have you written journal articles or served on professional committees? Have you written books and do you have teaching experience? What do your references look like?

Other things add to success or not success in the academic arena. If you have credible work experience in the area you want to teach, this will often help in finding positions. If you adjunct teach along the way that will also help. Then you will need to consider community colleges and smaller 4 year colleges for your first teaching opporutnity. Additionally, if you can publish articles and present at professional conferences you can increase your credibility and your opportunities. I have attended a number of academic graduations this year and have discovered a number of NOVA grads at different state colleges in key roles.

How are PhD or advanced degrees from schools with satellite offices viewed?

Webster, UoP, and Nova has a campus in Jacksonville.

Kelechi - it depends on several factors. What area are you interested in studying in? If you are in an area with a shortage of PhDs you'll will find teaching jobs easier to find than areas where there are large number of graduates. Liberal arts tends to be glutted, while professional areas like business are more open.

It also depends on what sort of school you are interested in teaching at. Top schools typically won't hire DL grads, but small and medium sized schools are often more flexible.

The U.S. Department of Labor notes a growing number of positions for college teachers in the next 10 years. I believe that retirements are driving this forecast to some extent.

What other credentials do you offer besides a PhD? If your only credential is a PhD, it better be from a top school. If you have professional and teaching experience, the degree you hold is only part of the package. Also, note that publications can help a lot.

My experience may not be typical. I transititioned from industry to a medium sized school with a DBA from Nova Southeastern and 17 years of adjunct experience. Four years later (and a number of publications), I shifted to my current school.

Life has been great for me. Will this work for others? I really can't say.

    Regards - Andy
