New University: An internationally recognised private non-campus university is to open on Niue early next year. The St Clements University with its registered office in the CarribeanTurks and Caicos Islands will initially be housed in the privately leased Hotel Niue. The chief executive officer
(Niue) Kupa Magatogia of Lakepa, a former director of education on Niue, said this week all the necessary paperwork for setting up the university has been completed. The administrative director, Australian Dr David Le Cornu, is expected to visit Niue in the New Year to open the facility. St Clements will not compete or overlap courses offered by the well established University of the South Pacific but will network with other recognised universities with distance learning facilities as well as run its own courses in information technology and business management. The fees will be similar to those of New Zealand universities. Mr Magatogia said eight computers will initially be available to students and all of the courses will be available via the Internet. The university will also host courses for other universities offering distance learning degres and diplomas. St Clements University claims to be a leading private non-campus International University dedicated to assisting candidates obtain their degrees in the most efficient way possible, while maintaining the quality of the degree. Information on its website says the Board is continually working to maximise the international recognition of the degrees. The University was registered in March 1995 as a university company on the United Kingdom Overseas Territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The University is also registered on the Independent Commonwealth nation of St Vincent & The Grenadines, and the Republic of Zambia. The Deputy Chancellor of the University is Professor Dr Godwin Nukunya from Ghana and, Administrative Director, Dr David Le Cornu, from Australia. As a commercial university, St Clements role in education is to assist candidates obtain the qualifications they need. St Clements University offers some programs in a campus environment, whilst the majority of programs are offered via distance learning. The University's degree programs are taught through a network of Affiliated and Partner schools located in 13 Commonwealth nations and three non-Commonwealth states. No other private University has such a world-wide network. St Clements is the second private university to open on Niue. The Lord Liverpool George Washington medical school set up three years ago by a group of US based investors suffered from fatal management upheavals and a lack of registered students. It had its licence cancelled by the former Premier Sani Lakatani who also banned the medical school's investors from visiting Niue because he considered them a threat to the national security of the island. Despite several legal attempts to continue operating the Lord Liverpool George Washington medical school closed its doors about a year after it officially opened.

    Cheers,
