    Hi, folks!

I'm new here, and have just spent the past two days without sleep, so prodigious is the amount of info found on this forum.

I've been quite impressed by the knowledgeable people on the forum, and I wish you all the best of luck and success in reaching your academic goals.

Now, however, I'm wondering if you could offer some suggestions. I have a BA in English (Writing) and an MA in German, both from RA schools. I am employed as a senior writer-editor at a major nonprofit. I'm somewhat obsessive, I guess, because I also do freelance writing (so far, for very little pay) and have a ton of unpublished manuscripts -- both fiction and nonfiction -- on my hard drive.

I'm about to step up my search for freelance clients and eventually go solo, positioning myself at the higher end of the rate scale. I'd like to enhance my marketability -- both to private clients and to universities -- by obtaining a doctorate in Writing* (DL of course).

Since I'm paying for it myself, and have two kids and a mortgage, it's got to be relatively inexpensive.

There has been discussion on this board about UNISA -- they seem quite affordable. Are there others you would suggest I check out? Middlesex? Edith Cowan? If UNISA is the best bet, would you have suggestions on how to navigate the maze? I understand their bureaucracy can be daunting.

I'd like to start next month, if that's possible.

Thank you all for your input.

*A PhD in English would also work, as long as it's DL. Comparative Lit might also fly.

    PHD's in South Africa

Look at Rhodes University the sight below specifies no residency is required.

Another guy on here was going through Vista but I think they have stopped accepting new students pending their merger with UNISA.

BG-14 lists the University of Melbourne as offering a doctoral program in their section on "Writing." It's a fairly ambiguous term as "writing," obviously can mean many things. In any case, the South African schools are definitely going to be the least expensive alternative and I'm the last one who will try to turn you from pursuing that course. I think that the UNISA option remains viable. Their web site is easier to navigate than before. I had no trouble finding these two links:
Department of Theory of Literature -
    http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=149
    Department of English
    http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=6902
Both have PhD programs. Good luck,
    Jack
P.S. Get some sleep. It'll all still be there in the morning.
