Not happy with CCHS

  1. I am nearly finished with my first course at CCHS but I'm not happy with the support. They want me to pay up front for the rest of my program, yet put me on hold for nearly an hour before I can speak with a representative. Has anyone completed the masters program at California College for Health Science (CCHS)?

I'm not about to fork over thousands of dollars if their situation is iffy. They just changed ownership, which makes me a little nervous.

I don't blame you for being concerned. Why would a school want, or worse need, your money up front. It makes me wonder if they're having trouble making payroll or planning on closing up shop soon.

It sounds like another big problem is the one hour wait time to speak with someone on the telephone. That's outrageous! I hope it doesn't take that long to speak to your professor, too.

  3. Planning to withdraw

As I stated earlier, I am enrolled in a course with CCHS. I have submitted all of my projects yet they claim I cannot schedule my final until 4 weeks after THEY get around to looking at them. I sent the first one in weeks ago. I have to go on jury duty at the end of January and then have surgery scheduled on my right hand in February, so I really need to take the final while I am able to write.

At this rate, I will finish my masters much earlier at the state university taking a regular load.

Has anyone on this board ever received a masters from CCHS and if so, did it take them a long time to grade projects?

Didn't do the masters, but I tried to do the Asoc in Respiratory Therapy just for the heck of it. They are not student friendly. I consider myself rather motivated, but on two occasions on which I needed help I received little and none. The pharmacology course had books that were supposed to contain everything you needed to complete the course. I was having some difficulty...when I asked the school for help they said "everything you need is in the book." I asked a registered nurse who worked in respiratory to look at the assignment, she brought it back and just shook her head. Not to be denied I took it to the director of pharmacy and asked her opinion. She asked "where are the study guides?" So, since I was doing the study just for fun I said to h with it. I think they are simply prostituting their programs and are trying to increase cash flow. Just my 2 cents worth.

I believe Jimmy Clifton was in the same program and was starting to have doubts. A recent change of ownership was eliminating the monthly payment plan, requiring payments to be more up front.

Start looking at other programs to see if they have better options. If you're only one course in, it should transfer. Use the search function and you may find more info.

  6. Better option for Respiratory

I have been a Registered Respiratory Therapist for more than 20 years. Because there is a huge demand for qualified people, the large HMO that I work for has considered training people from our hospital that work in other areas as therapists, using the CCHS program. The plan is for me to coordinate the clinical training so the students receive practical experience. My company is looking very carefully at the way the master's program is going for me before they make such a huge investment. I have a BA and a teaching credential as well as a 4.0 GPA from my other coursework.

When I return to work after my surgery, a definate decision will be made about what avenue the company will pursue. My opinion is that community colleges do a good job preparing therapists but privately operated schools turn out therapists will poor training.

If you are looking for a therapist program, look at a community college. To earn a RRT, the new rule requires at least a BA/BS.
