Greetings, Does anyone here have experience with/has examples of/point to examples of completed alternative route porfolios for teacher certification? My understanding states such as in New England have provisions in the law for obtaining "license by evaluation" (based on establishing competencies through a portfolio--much like earning credit at some of the colleges that are oft mentioned here). I hope to hear from anyone regarding this potential route, which is in the form of non-traditional credentialling. KKA
Try Alaska A number of years ago I tried something similar in Alaska. I did not have a certificate, but had a degree and a fair amount of teaching in private schools, corporate settings, etc. I was told by the school district there to apply for substitute. After a certain amount of time/experience (I don't remember the exact criteria), I could be certified and given a full-time job. I don't know if the same rules apply now, but, if you're willing to move to Alaska, you might inquire there. Good luck, Dale
Good Morning, Try your county Board of Education and ask for a teachers certification packet. There may be an option that you are not aware of. Hille
While Massachusetts does have an "alternative route" process for teacher certification, I do not believe that it includes the portfolio process that you've described. I am unaware of the alternative route processes of the other New England states but I do not believe this portfolio process exists in Rhode Island or Connecticut either. I'd suggest that you check your facts before you spend too much time searching for something that may not really exist. Jack
I know one person going through this in Vermont. I think it works best when you find a school that wants to hire you and have them help you through the process. It is frequently used by people with a degree in an appropriate dicipline but either no education courses, or a smattering of education courses that are not part of a program that leads to a licensure recommendation from a school of education.
Due to the fact that my company does many Teacher Certificaion evaluation for students that have gone to school outside of the US I might be able to help. We usually do course by course evaluation then the applicant take the evaluation to the school district who then sends the evaluation to the education board who makes the final decsion. So basically what I am saying is check the board of education for New England. There are probably several forms you will have to fill out. From there the Board of Education will go over that information and probably tell you what is missing. hope this helps.
Alternative Teacher Certification For those of you who honorably served in the Military, there's the Troops to teacher program which will help in state certification. http://www.proudtoserveagain.com/
