Is this school legitimate? It appears to be active in Hong Kong and PR China. I cannot find a listing in Bear's guide.

If it doesn't show up in the latest edition of Bear's Guide then that is a bad sign. It's a bad sign because many degree mills pop up and are closed down before an investigation can be conducted and information placed in Bear's Guide. Far more new degree mills are started up than bona fide schools.

I remember hearing something about them before. Please e-mail me details and I will chase it up.

    Cheers,

    George

The link may not lead directly to the intended website, but typing in the address, as is, and then entering, appears to work.

    Hi Mohammed,

I found it - the URL is actually http://www.btinternet.com/~european.university/wwweui.html

Yes, this has been discussed before, but not in great detail. Where did you see the marketing ads, etc?

    Cheers,

    George

I love the first line of text on their self description on their website:

EUI is formed by reputed academics to conduct non-traditional degree programmes.

John Bear, who had not heard of them
until these postings, and cannot find
them in any standard directory of
    schools

Some weeks ago I somehow surfed into a website for Irish students with complete listings of all IRE-universities - and this one was NOT included (I´m gonna search for the URL again when I have more time and tell it to you).
Besides, the website itself looks rather unprofessional - seems like a diploma mill for me.

There is no such university in Ireland. A degree mill.......

Some degree mills are active in China and Hong Kong. Unfortunately, no government departments, especially Department of Education, will take action on it (unless someone reports to the police for deception).

This university also stated that it is associated with a few Chinese renowed universities, but it is untrue ! It should have a small office alleging a campus in Ireland.

John: I had a meeeting last month with R. J. (Jim) Bell, Chief Investigator of the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption. He was interested only in one particular institution, not connected with selling degrees. I tried to interest him in the diploma mill problem. He was polite but uninterested I'd even prepared a list of those I know to be active in HK and elsewhere in China. He took it and made polite noises about passing it along to someone, but I won't hold my breath.

John, is it possible to publish the list here?

    Mohammed,

    Greetings from Ireland,

I wiil check out this so called school for you and post a reply to the board on Monday. I have tried to contact them by phone but no joy. A colleague of mine in Dublin tells me that the address is most probably an apartment complex.

I personally have never heard of the school and I pretty much know all the 3rd level institutions in Ireland. To me this one is definitely bogus, even the crest is a fake. However to be absolutely certain I will conduct some official enquiries.

    don't shoot, G-men!

An article (free subscription required) from the Times Higher Education Supplement, April 16, 2004:
See also this thread, and this February, 2000 article.

The rather cheesy EUI site is here: www.btinternet.com/~european.university/wwweui.html.

I think the "The Australian" news paper one listed it as one of the A-Z universities to look out, if I recall it correctly.

This school is complete nonsense. If there were an approved European school of Ireland it would be in, oddly enough Ireland. That is my home, and the rents are rising, but they have yet to offshore the schools.

This stuff about "reputed academics" reminded me of Queens University of Brighton, which used the same odd language.

I'm curious: Would a British or Irish person use the phrase "reputed academic" to refer to what an American would call a "reputable academic", or does it sound odd to European ears as well?

Here in California, the words 'reputed academic' suggest 'alleged academic', which is kind of fitting (and ironic) in these cases.

I'm wondering if this is an example of a local Hong Kong or Chinese English usage, and a tip-off of the owners' nationality.

I think you are being too hard on these guys – they broke new ground in the use of the word “honorary”. Also they should be commended for the use of “reputed academics” in the introduction – without people like this who could we laugh at?
