I've just finished my Master's in Counseling from Webster U., and am considering going on to a PhD or EdD program, but cost is the factor. I am in a rural part of Florida with literally no access to anything but on-line programs. Getting this degree will not increase my salary enough to justify 20K+ spending on it, but I can afford 10K or less. I have submitted a 30 page dissertation proposal to a retired PhD Mich St. Psych professor who says I am "extremely capable" to get this degree, so say my Webster profs., etc. etc...I am extremely interested in my field and want to do this. All it will get me is more respect in my field (Guidance Counselor), next to no extra pay, so an accredited school is not important except that I would like a quality education. Capella is my first choice, but I cannot possibly afford it ever.

Is there any chance I could hang a WPU PhD on my wall and be proud of it...?

No. It only serves to fool others into thinking that you completed an actual degree.

Please consider altering your paradigm to include the relation between accreditation and "respect." You will find that properly recognized accreditation will bring such respect.

Apparently, the cheapest legitimate advanced degrees available to distance learners (who speak only English) are those offered by South African universities.

I would recommend you look at UNISA. This is a highly respected GAAP accredited university. They are one of the least expensive schools to attend.
