At the expense of resurrecting an ancient thread, what ever happened to the Guerrilla Marketing MBA? Anyone know?

Way of the Dodo, one would hope. Nothing more than an MBA in "Flash of the Pan Cool Thing of the Moment".

A very good B&M school with a significant DL footprint considered offering this, but the deal fell through.

Actually 3 good universities were seriously interested in offering 3 or 4 "guerilla" courses as part of their MBA curriculum, but none would consider an entire guerilla-based MBA, which is what Jay wanted. (One of the considerers was Edinburgh Business School, whose courses at the time cost £800, leading, of course, to amusing references to "the eight hundred pound guerilla.")

This annoys me to no end. There is no such thing as an MBA in "insert business discipline here". An MBA IS A GENERALIST DEGREE, IF YOU WANT TO STUDY MARKETING GET A MS-MARKETING, IF YOU WANT TO STUDY FINANCE GET A MS-FINANE, AND IF YOU WANT TO EARN A DEGREE IN GURILLA MARKETING YOU'RE AN IDIOT. this has been a rant.

Did I take that to far?

Not far enough but its a great start.

Elite MBA programs don't have discipline distinctions as you mentioned such as Finance, Gorilla or Archeology. I don't know what school would want to offer an MBA in Guerrilla Marketing. There would be a lot of explaining in that interview.

Schools have been awarding MBA degrees with specializations (such as marketing) for decades. But you're not an idiot.

I realize they have specializations, but it doesn't make it "an MBA in...", that makes it an "MBA with a concentration in..." or "MBA with a focus in...". If I only saw it a handful of times I'd just chalk it up to being a typo/mis-speaking, but I've seen it hundreds of times which makes me think people don't really understand the degree and I find it annoying that someone looking to complete the degree doesn't really grasp what the degree is, a generalist degree exposing you to functions across the area of business.

This is a difference without a distinction. Saying "an MBA in...." doesn't create a material misrepresentation. It is a quibble.

Yes, you usually do  but this keeps the board entertaining.

How about an MBA in Gorilla Marketing. It might be pretty interesting, first on the list "Gorillas in the Mist".

I disagree. And I find it annoying. "An MBA in...." implies it is a specialized degree focusing on a particular area and that isn't what an MBA is. Glad we got that cleared up.

Maybe that's what it used to be, and maybe that's what it's supposed to be, but there seem to be an awful lot of counterexamples out there these days. I think this particular horse has already left the barn.

If there are schools promoting "MBA in..." that's sad. It's either their administration is stupid and doesn't know what they are doing or are being deceitful knowing that most people don't realize the degree is being misrepresented. Look at any top program (top 20ish). They don't do that, maybe it's because they know the majority of their applicants are going to be a more informed group.
