Has anyone an opinion of this university? They offer DL MBA and DBA degrees, but I haven't been able to assess the university's reputation. The MBA isn't accreditted. The Financial Times apparently ranked it as one of the top 20 business schools worldwide for DL. If so, its very low-profile.
University of surrey is a charterd (US read accredited) UK university. It has been discussed before, and for details try the search function in the top right corner. Not Oxbridge, but respectible.
A perfectly reasonable mid-ranking pre-1992 university with a technological/engineering emphasis. Solid degrees and a reputation for good teaching. Think of it as sortof an English equivalent to Heriot Watt. The FT DL rankings are, er, a bit odd. As far as I can see, they're measuring how many people there are on a DL MBA, rather than whether the MBA is any good or not. Notably, the list is labelled as "20 of the top distance learning MBAs", which is a very different beast to "the top 20". For info, the FT list was published in March this year and comprises: University of Phoenix Heriot-Watt University Henley Management College Open University Business School Warwick Business School Manchester Business School UK Itesm University of Durham Business School University of Liverpool/Kit eLearning University of Surrey School of Management Cardean Strathclyde GSB Virginia Tech: Pamplin Bradford School of Management Indiana University: Kelly Direct Aston Business School Imperial College school of management Babson College Pennsylvania State University: Smeal Jones International University Angela
Odd Quite a strange list, the FT has! A real mixture of top tier, also-ran's and some quirky experiments like Cardean! Surrey's DBA seems quite balnd - just semo research courses and the dissertation, whereas many of the others include a few other courses. More pricey than Heriot-Watt, so if its comparable, I'd go that route, esp since H-W are probably slicker at DL, being that big. Although you might argue that H-W's higher profile is negative - I see that in SA (where I live now), the local business rag ranked H-W at 12, way behind the better local universities..
Univ Cal Santa Cruz has a deal where students can spend one year at Univ of Surrey and get full credit to a bachelor degree.
Research Surrey seems to be well rated in terms of research, whereas (I think) Heriot-Watt is more focussed on teaching. Perhpas that explains the different degree structures - Surrey would rather not expend the infrastructure in DBA courses, but can simply use its existing PhD structure, given that they have far fewer distance students than H-W. So Surrey may be a better "name", but not necessarily be a better DBA. Anyone know of any other DL DBAs that require NO residency? There a a lot of posts alluding to them, but on investigation almost every program has some residency requirement.
Surrey Surrey sounds quite good, although all my research is bringing me around to just doing a part-time PhD locally (in SA). I can even do it via UNISA, which is just up the road from where I live! But theres always a snag - UNISA call their business doctorate a DBL (business leadership), but it looks closer to a PhD than a DBA. Why do they complicate things unnecessarily? Oh well, maybe p-t Wits Business School (Witwatersrand U) is the way to go ...
