The Chronicle of Higher Education is sponsoring a live, online discussion about regulation of unaccredited, online colleges, on Wednesday, March 21, at 12:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern time. Alan L. Contreras, administrator of the Office of Degree Authorization of the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, will answer questions about how states can monitor such institutions, some of which may award degrees that are of little value. Oregon is known for its tough approach to the issue, but other states continue to struggle with how to monitor these institutions. The Chronicle invites members of this list to read an article about this issue, to pose questions for Mr. Contreras (advance questions may be posted now), and to join Wednesday's chat at: http://chronicle.com/colloquylive/2001/03/unaccredited/chat.php3 A transcript will be available at this address following the discussion.
