    Hi,

I am interested in SOAS master degree program (distance learning). Actually, I applied for financial economics.

Does anyone hear about the reputation about this program or
    anyone take this program?

Of, course, UOL is good school, but I would like to know about DL.

To tell the truth, after finishing this program, I would like to apply for Ph.D program of economics(on-campus).

Thus, to take good grade at good school seems to be good storategy.....

I would appreciate it if you would let me know about this program
and make comments about my plan.

The assessment of the program is by assignments (2 or 3 assignments per course) plus 3-hour unseen examinations. One has to submit all the assignments of a course in order to be eligible for the examination of that course. (I am not sure if there is any change in the rules now).

You can now get the online support through the CeFIMS website of the SOAS.

Basically, one with SOAS MSc is eligible for the application of PhD offered by SOAS or other UK universities depending on the specific requirements of different universities. However, MSc is a coursework master degree program and most PhD programs may require some research skills. So some universities may require one with coursework master to start with MPil program first.

Graduate can join the SOAS alumni association and one of the local chapters throughout the world.

    Research skills

If you want to start your PhD program direct from MSc in Financial Economics, you may consider to select such courses with research skills training as "Econometric Principles and Data Analysis", "Econometric Analysis and Applications", and "Research Methods". I don't know whether the "Research Methods" is still one of the electives and which requires special permission of the Academic Director before one can take it.

However, one must be good at statistics to study for econometrics.

I did the MSc in Financial Management, which is basically the same degree. I found the macro-economics core courses quite good, but wasn't enthralled with much of the more business-oriented material. In summary, I think that if you're focussed on economics, then fine. If you want to do something more business-oriented, a good MBA or MSc would be a better bet.

    Hi Jun
I am taking the MSc in Financial economics and have just finished my first year examination last month.
Each Subjects will take 2 compulsory assignments and 3 hours unseen examinations.
Generally the course is good with moderate examination.

In my opinion, however, some subjects are better than the others in explaining the material.I will summarize my point of view in the following based on the subjects I have just taken:

*Banking and Finance:good and adequate material, moderate tutor support and good examination questions

*Exchange rates and international finance:the material is less than the above subjects but for me its still ok,tutor is not supportive but the exam is quite fair.

*Bank Financial management:a lot of material, very helpful tutor and challenging exam.

Now Iam still waiting for the result.

    Thank you all

    Thank you all.

    I appreciate your kind messages.

Actually, I am studying public policy at grad school in U.S and have B.A in economics in other country.

I am so interested in financial economics and I would like to get
good GPA at SOAS to sterengthen my application for Ph.D program

( My GPA is not so good at this school, my school is so competitive.... so by taking good grades at SOAS, If icould , I would like to apply for Ph.D department of LSE, some in U.S.A...).

By eric, Macro is so good if we study economics. So how about other courses?

If anyone know other courses(level and so on), I would appreciate it if you would let me know and advise me with such background.

    Soas dl

    Hi Jun

I was searching the net and came across this!
Actually I am a PhD student at a University in Switzerland and contemplating taking the MSc Finance (Economic Policy) program at SOAS.

So did you finally complete the DL program? did it lead you to a PhD in Finance at SOAS etc? Thank you for your reply.

    Seb
