I thought DANTES tests were available to anyone to take who pays the fee and sets for the test. I guess I'm stupid, this is not correct? I called the closest Dantes testing center and they told me I must be active or retired military or the spouse of such. Is this correct?
This is incorrect, Dantes test are given to both civilian and military personnel (I’ve taken a few and have never been in any branch of the armed forces). Maybe you need to try calling a different test center. Just in case you don’t have the website, here it goes: http://www.getcollegecredit.com You can also run a search on the board and will find many answers to your questions.
Greetings. I believe that DANTES DSSTs are but one aspect of MiniLove's DANTES program (http://www.dantes.doded.mil/dantes_web/danteshome.asp?Flag=True). It is entirely possible that some aspects of the program are only available to military personal, but the DSST exams are not so restricted. If someone told you that they were, they were wrong. To reiterate, even if you are a perfectly healthy young man who chooses to cower in safety while others fight to protect your freedom, you are still permitted to take their DANTES DSST exams. <g> Perhaps the person you spoke to meant that their office only provided testing services to military personal, not that the test itself was thus restricted? Cordially, Richard Kanarek
As already mentioned, DANTES are available to anyone. They were previously for military only, but that changed years ago. Was the closest testing center a military base?
You were probably working off a list of military sites. You need to find the list of colleges offering the exams more typically known as DSST than DANTES. Many CLEP colleges offer the tests.
