    Hi,

Is it a requirement to take English Composition with Essay from Excelsior? is it a requirement that ECE exam must be taken ? The reason I ask this is that I have seen a lot of people complain about getting C grade when they take ECE English exam. So I want to aviod that and was wondering if there is any other that would satisfy the requirement (may Athabasca or other college course?). I am not enrolled with Excelsior yet so I cant get this answer from them.

I think bain4weeks mentions to take CLEP English with Essay to satisfy that requirement. When I downloded exam guide from Excelsior it says that English Composition and Freshman College Composition exam does not satisfies the requirement. I dont want to take ECE exam only to get C grage. any alternatives ? (Please correct me If I did not understand this requirement correctly)

I took English at Wash State U/Clark College and it did NOT satisfy the requirements. It seems theirs is the only one that meets their requirements. Remember the "Golden Rule": "Him that has the gold makes the rules"

The CLEP English used to be accepted by Excelsior but it no longer is. During my Excelsior days I was able to take an English class via DL and have the credit added to my trascript with no problems. I've never taken that pesky ECE on English Comp.

Even though I have extensive credits in engllish and Honors English comp, it still didn't satisfy Excelsior's requirements.

My ENC1101 (english comp I) taken at Broward Community College satisfied the english requirement for an Associate degree.

I have never heard of Excelsior NOT accepting a college level composition course towards an english requirement (not saying much). I do know that Excelsior will not take the english CLEP but will accept the english ECE.

i am quite surprise that jerry and dr gina cannot meet the requirement from excelsior.

as according to their Liberal art catalog :
    "
    Written English Requirement

You must demonstrate competency in expository
writing in English in one of the following ways:

Successful completion of a college course
    (minimum 3 semester or 4 quarter-hour credits;
minimum grade of C) from one of the
    following options:
    a. One-semester expository writing course
    b. Two institutionally designated writing intensive, writing emphasis courses
    c. Two applied writing courses. The applied writing courses must focus on different applications of the writing process.

Examples of one-semester courses (3 semester hours) that will satisfy the Written English Requirement:

    English Composition
    Expository Writing I
    Freshman Composition
    Effective Writing
    Introduction to Writing
    College Writing I "

from the above it seen that any 1st year college english compo course should meet the requirement.

    can anyone verify?

    My first class

I recieved EC credit for my first college class, University of Maryland/University College ENG 101. The classroom was at Osan AB in Korea, 1989. We were exempt for participating in training exercises in class, so I remember alarm sirens going off during the class and seeing folks run around in chem masks outside the windows, some of the only ones that did not have to be blacked out with sheet plastic.

In my opinion Intro to Comp is the best class for any student of any age to start a program with.

well you see that is the problem. not all courses would satisfy Excelsior's English requirements. The easiest choice would be CLEP English but they categorically say it would not satisfy the requirements. Maybe some courses attended at a college physically may satisfy the requirements but I dont know which one exactly, but I still have a feeling that Excelsior is trying to force people to take ECE exam.!

I received credit and met the English requirement through the completion of ENG 101 and also took Eng 102 at the University of North Dakota.

I took Eng 101 and 102, plus Eng 208 Technical Writing AND Eng 211 Research Writing. Got shot down with no explanation. Lowest grade was B+. Also took a couple of DANTES exams, then found out they are not acceptable when they just didn't show up on transcript.

CLEP English Composition with Essay does not fulfill the Written English Requirement (WER) at Excelsior College. That has been the position since 1st September 1997. There are inumerable statements to this effect in BA in 4 Weeks. There is no statement to the contrary anywhere in the text.

I see that in the bachelor degree manual, in the first 118 words, of the first page, there are three references/warnings/caveats:

From BA in 4 Weeks: Bachelor Degree http://bain4weeks.com/BSdegree.html

    "CLEP GENERAL EXAMS

    1. Do the general CLEP exams. If enrolled in Excelsior College, substitute the ECE exam "English Composition" for the CLEP "English Composition with Essay".

    2. . . . Excelsior students should substitute ECE "English composition" as noted above.

    3.
    · English Composition with Essay*
*or ECE English Composition for Excelsior students
    "

From BA in 4 Weeks: Synopsis http://bain4weeks.com/quicktour.html

"ECE English Composition required in the case of Excelsior College, not CLEP English with Essay"

Did you follow up on this? Email them and ask why. One thing I have learned (not just Excelsior; all schools I am guessing) is that nothing is written in stone (well almost nothing.. tuition might be hard to talk your way out of paying). Ask them WHY you Eng101 and 102 do NOT satisfy the english requirement? Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe they couldn't find your schools website to look up the course description and it was a Friday, so they said, "oh well he doesn't meet english requirements." Was your school DETC accredited or RA? I got 10 extra hours added to my evaluation for technical elective credit they thought I didn't rate. I emailed them and told them WHY I thought I did, and they replied, "Your right, Mr. Ready. We added it to your transcript." You will never know unless you try, right?
