I'm looking into the ALB @ Harvard extension. Does anyone know anything about this such as can it be done by DL? Any residencies? The website is not very clear, so any info u can give, especially points I might have overlooked would be most welcome. Thanks in advance for your help!
Other Ivies Another thing... the reason I ask about Harvard extension is because it is the only Ivy I've heard of that offers bachelors degree by DL. If anyone knows of any other Ivies, please do include info on those as well. Thanks!
The ALM is quite specific about having to take some courses in person. Could not find any specific requirement for the ALB. http://extension.dce.harvard.edu/2003-04/programs/undergrad/reqs/alb/default.jsp My question is, does the degree simply say Harvard University or does Extension appear in the title?? I guess, who would care??
I do not believe that you can complete the degree requirements solely with DL credits. You should contact them directly though, they're typically quite friendly (usually it's a work-study student who answers the phone. This equals instant empathy.) Back when I got my HES ALB (it was 1986) there were no DL offerings at all. BTW Dennis, my diploma says: HARVARD UNIVERSITY blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Again, that was 1986. Maybe it's different now. Jack
The degree does explicitly say "Extension School" on the diploma, since it´s the school (/department) of the Harvard University that grants the title (check the FAQ´s on their website!). Besides, it is not possible to get the degree totally by Distance Education. You need to come local for quite a number of classes (but you can also take summer sessions!). I checked that all about a year ago, but decided against it because no "normal" person can afford even their summer school tuitions... greets, trigger
This may or may not be urban legend, but I have heard that the Harvard Extension diplomas are printed in English, while the traditional Harvard diplomas are printed in Latin. I have no idea if that's actually the case. I know many, many, people who have taken courses through Harvard Extension, yet I only "know" one person who actually completed a program there (our own Jack Tracey).
Hi Bruce - I guess I'll have to add some confusion here. While my HES diploma is entirely in English (and thus supports one end on the urban legend) I was watching a news show recently related to a woman who had just graduated from the Harvard Kenedy School of Governmnet. They flashed a shot of her diploma and it sure looked to me that it too was entirely in English. Whatever. Jack
I know the ALM degree is in Latin now. This was taken from Harvard's website: Does the diploma say Extension School? Yes, in Latin. The diploma reads UNIVERSITAS HARVARDIANA; then, after the graduate's name comes Magistri in Artibus Liberalibus Studiorum Prolatorum (Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies). Jon
Yeah, I saw that too. Over the summer I talked to one of my profs who got his MA from Harvard and he told me his was in Latin.
