OK... So my cuz is graduating high school. Wants to study Business at one of the university of London colleges. He has the cash to study full-time. However, he knows that college can be a waste of time in some ways and has been thinking about doing a UoL degree via distance, while working in the day. I told him about the Heriot-Watt MBa via DL and now he's thinking bout that too! He's not the type to get involved in campus activities so it'll be as if he is at school 'cause he'll be living at home , just commuting between the two.

    Any advice???

Distance learning takes a lot of discipline. There are 100 things that compete for time, especially if working full time. My choice for people that don't have to work is don't work. A few years of diligence will pay back 100 times the amount the average 18 year old earns at a job.

If he is really bright, tell him to try the London School of Economics and Political Science. Probably have to work like hell but he would never have to look back and wonder if he did the right thing.

This may be shock that he did not expect. Maybe he should try a couple of Independent Study courses from LSU (or similar) to see how he handles it. I have made massive strides towards my degree in a very short time as a DL student, but it has been harder than I expected. I considered myself a disciplined person, but working full time and having a wife takes away from my study time more than I anticipated.

Wanting something and being willing to sacrifice a lot for it are two different things. I could not have done a DL degree when I was a teenager, but I'll bet I would have thought I could!

I'm just saying that if he bites off more than he can chew then he may regret the whole experience.

How does your cousin like homework? Explain that DL is actually ALL homework. A lot will depend on his personality. I was home-schooled (actually boat-schooled) so I'm used to sitting in a corner doing schoolwork.
So: How does your cousin like homework?
