I'm looking into the D.Th. degree from Greenwich School of Theology (via Potchefstroom) and UNISA. Would appreciate any comments about these schools. Thanks.
Both schools are credible and accredited. The past two years with Unisa taught me to expect little from my supervisor. A few days ago I finally received an e-mail from him, though I've been attempting to communicate with him since May 2003!! I have since "moved on." I could stand the lack of responsible supervision no longer. If you choose Unisa, be prepared for head and heart-aches. GST is a solid school, accepted -- it seems -- by many, and could be sufficient to land you a respectable teaching job somewhere. Might I also suggest that you look at Dr. Jason Baker's web site, which lists a bunch of international programs, including U-Zululand (very affordable and fully accredited), U-Free State and others.
GST is also prone to assign unreachable directors, possibly dead , and Potchefstroom is now merged into University of North West. You are also paying high dollar for the GST connection when you could deal direct with SA at several other schools. UNW is an unknown name, so whatever cachet Potchefstroom had among some conservative Christians is now open to question. Proceed with caution.
Giving up 100 year old names for short sighted and clearly ethnic reasons is, bluntly, stupid. Instead of elevating the status of historically black institutions, I suspect they using the lowest common denominator approach. If students with a University of Northwest degree can't get into programs that Pooch students had no problems entering, I wouldn't be surprised.
