Recommend U of Bridgeport?

There is another Masters program at Central Michigan University. You might want to do that "compare and contrast" thing. AFAIK those are the only two US DL Masters programs. If you're willing to go non-US then take a look at Deakin U, South Bank U and Keele U. Good luck.

I am new to this forum, but hope to get some straight-up info on a respectable program for an M.S. in Nutrition--would the University of Bridgeport's program be recommended by anyone here? Or would someone recommend another DL Nutrition program more highly?

I am especially wary because I was bamboozled into registering for a similar program at Clayton College, only to realize very quickly upon seeing the texts that the Clayton program was educational MUSH!

    Thanks.

I don't have any personal experience with the University of Bridgeport.

But I will say that Bridgeport has a reputation for 'alternative' medicine. It offers degrees in acupuncture (an MS), chiropractic (a DC) and naturopathy (an ND).

I suppose that fans of those sorts of things might consider U. of B. to be very good. But those who are less favorable might assume that the school produces some kind of alternative nutritionists as well.

Of course, the majority of people probably don't know or don't care about that stuff.

Another thing: Is there a specialized accreditor for nutrition? I'm not aware of one, but you might want to verify that.

University of Bridgeport is located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. I disagree that it will sound silly but I also think that Central Michigan will be a better choice for Leslie.

    Hello Jack,
I cannot find a link for the Nutrition Masters at Central Michigan University. Can you furnish it?

    Thanks,
    Howard

Hi Howard - I pulled the info from BG14, not from the school web site. After your question I went to the school web site and could not find any indication that they have any sort of degree program in nutrition, Masters or otherwise, DL or classroom-based. I'm sorry but it seems that I have passed out inaccurate information.

The U. of Bridgeport is regionally accredited and its DL nutrition graduate program appears to be comprehensive and intense. It is in a totally different category than nutrition programs from unaaccredited programs.

I'd go with Central Michigan if I were you. Given where you live, University of Bridgeport is just gonna sound silly. I mean, like, what next, Sauganash State or Hegewisch Polytechnic?

    Jack,

Just yesterday, I read a message on the Central Michigan website saying that admission to the Masters in Nutrition program is closed for now. No further information--sounded weird to me. But, in addition, there are undergraduate Nutrition credits required for admission, which I don't have. The Central Michigan program is targeted for folks with undergraduate work in Nutrition--not for career-changers like me. Of course, I could take the prerequisites separately...

Perhaps I'll look at the non-US programs, although the U of Bridgeport is not sounding all that bad. (I suppose I have one of those "alternative" points of view, although I'd prefer "rigorous and alternative" to simply "alternative").

    Thanks all.

    LeslieK,

Does it matter to you that U of Bridgeport is owned by Rev. Moon (the "moonies" leader)?

The University of Bridgeport, which is currently classified as a doctoral intensive university, was established in 1927. Rev Moon may be the current owner of the university but the university was established before Rev Moon was born.

    Hi Dr Ike:

I spent many years in exile in Chitcago. These are names of neighbourhoods not particularly associated with academic centres. Bridgeport is the home satrapy of the mayors Daley. I recall driving home (to a near north suburb) in a snowstorm from the church I worked at in the Chatham neighbourhood. Snow, ice, screaming female, the whole sorry works, blind, deaf, and dumb as a post. Visibility zero, snow whumping against the car sides, ice all over the windscreen. Cross whatever the boundary was into Bridgeport and begorra! the age of miracles was not over, me boyos. Not a speck of snow sticking to a street, nothing, nada. My senior pastor, who was from Mississippi in the Bad Old Days, splained it to me: "Black folks, white streets; white folks, black streets."

I spent a lot of time there just going "oh".

Nutrition at Finch University / Chicago Medical School!

    Thanks loads, BillDayson!

I've found the closest thing to a specialized accreditor for nutrition, which is the specialized accreditor for DIETETICS (slightly more hospital-related than nutrition, seems like), and through that accreditor, I've found a pretty strong and non-alternative-appearing program right in my backyard, by chance, at Finch University / Chicago Medical School! They have a nice-looking M.S. in Nutrition via DL!

Thanks for your perspective on the reputation of Bridgeport (and thanks for the joke-story, Uncle Janko!) and a nudge to find an accreditor.

    Leslie
