I received today a note from the Executive Director of the Harold Abel School of Psychology at Capella University (Bruce Weiss, PhD). I am providing the main part of his note:

Sounds like they are serious about getting APA accreditation. The APA will accredit a program once there are students at every level of the program. In other words, the program will need to have students who have completed their 4 years of coursework and who are preparing to enter their internships before the APA will accredit the program. So we are looking at 2007 for possiible APA approval.

    Hey, Blackbird,

I think that seeking APA accreditation for a PsyD program is more doable than with the PhD.

I'm just a bit disappointed that Capella has to drop so many interesting specializations (sports psychology, addictions) because of APA.
I don't know if they will be reinstated under a different format or not but time will tell.

But I'm glad that Capella is making such serious efforts to get professional accreditations. These steps will further enhance the credibility of dl education.

    Capella specializations (Psychology)

Capella is communicating that the same courses from each specialization will be available but under the General Psychology Ph.D. It will be sort of a "design your Gen. Psych. Doc. Degree"

Current Ph.D. learners will be able to get their degree as usual but new ones have new changed choices.

The traditional heavy research oriented dissertation process for the Ph.D in Psychology at Capella will eventually be modified to reflect the project oriented dissertation that is the basis for Psy.D programs.
