What's up with the Global Alliance for Transnational Education?
    http://www.edugate.org

They talk like they are, or are planning to become, an international distance education accreditor. Obviously there's a need for an credible and understandable international QA body.

Unfortunately I was unable to find a list of institutions that these people actually accredit. Just lots of fluff about conferences and newsletters.

And I am troubled by the fact that GATE is owned by Jones International. How credible can a supposedly objective and impartial international DL QA body be when it is a subsidiary of a profit making American DL venture?

I would much prefer that a group of the most respected and credible international universities already offering distance education band together to form an association, then develop some QA guidelines to evaluate new members to the group. And let the management of the group be by vote of its members.

I posted a bunch on them last year on a.e.d. They had accredited two schools: Jones' own Jones International, and Monash in Australia (which was working closely with Jones). But then Glenn Jones apparently fired all of GATE's outside directors, and replaced them with Jones employees, and Monash resigned in a huff, and the future of it all seemed a bit murky. They're clearly going strong and, it seems to me, still acting as if they intend to become what would be the first international accreditor with a claim to legitimacy (though still swirled in controversy).

Perhaps, at the present time, GATE is "all fluff, and not much stuff."

I agree with Bill that it would be great to have an international accrediting agency (or quality assurance group) which would give credibility to all member institutions worldwide. Somewhat of a RA system only on an international basis.

    Hi,

Some with an interest in world-wide DE Quality Assurance might like to look at what is being tried by me and a few others at www.bfranklin.edu/deqa/ to apply the new ISO 9001:2000 standard to Distance Education.

Those in the corporate sector appear to be the most interested so far, but we get occasional enquiries from universities - and that's before a more formal launch when the package is closer to completion.

Oh, and by the way, the applicable licensing/accrediting measure would come under Clause 8.2.3 of the new standard (in the Measurement, Analysis and Improvement section).

Anyone else interested, please send me a mail.

    Cheers,

    Neil
