I had no problems either with my USNY (Excelsior) BSLS. What seemed equally important was satisfying degree prerequisits which applied to all applicants.

    Hi everyone,

I am currently a student at Excelsior College in the Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts program. I am just wondering if anyone knows how other schools judge Excelsior if I wanted to go into graduate work. There website lists a number of schools, but I would like to hear from someone who has experience. Has anyone been judged with the name or the quality of work?

    Thanks.

I had no problems whatsoever getting into the grad school of my choice with my Excelsior degree. The bachelor's degree is only one part of the package when you are trying to "sell yourself" to an admissions committee. As long as the degree has regional accreditation and you have an acceptable GPA, you've got that part covered.

Part of the research for "Accelerated Master's Degrees by Distance Learning", has entailed enrolling in a number of graduate programs (in double digits now). I have been accepted by every school to which I've applied: unconditionally.

This on the basis of USNY/Regents/Excelsior undergraduate degrees. I have never been asked to "explain" items appearing in the transcript, or to provide more detailed documentation for "further consideration", or any of usual signals of Admissions doubt or distrust. The degrees have been accepted by graduate schools in three continents. The U.S. degree with honors has been treated, for the purposes of admission, as an honors degree at the required level, were entry into a foreign graduate program required a 2.1 or 2.2 honors or equivalent.

Though I graduated from the University of the State of New York (USNY) and then from Regents College, current transcripts are solely in the name of Excelsior College. Additionally, near 100% of the semester hour credit appearing on the transcripts was earned by testing out. This is made abundantly clear on the transcripts. Excelsior makes no attempt to finesse this, unlike other assessment institutions, which many believe demonstrate greater sensitivity. Nevertheless, no graduate admissions officer batted an eye.

Note that the results may have been different had I not met the various programs GPA requirements. Some have argued that banded credit from which a GPA may be calculated is unnecessary. I’m not convinced. Every graduate program to which I have applied has stipulated some minimum GPA. While it may be possible to find ways around this, those with an acceptable record of performance (often a GPA of 3.0 over the last sixty hours of credit) wont have to find a way around it. As a student at Excelsior, you will have every opportunity to build that record of graded performance.

(NOTE: Peter Glaeser, also a graduate of Excelsior College, applied to 10 of the top 20 graduate schools in the UK. He received acceptances from nine out of the ten on the basis of his Excelsior Bachelor's degree. See http://www.bain4weeks.com/peterglaeser.html )
