Asmal announces changes to university names

    Sunday Times, Tuesday October 21, 2003 14:50 - (SA)

The name Unisa is to remain, a university is to be named after former president Nelson Mandela, and the term technikon is to disappear, Education Minister Kader Asmal said today.

He was announcing the new names of higher education institutions which are to merge in terms of a plan approved by Cabinet earlier this year.

The term technikon was obsolete and these institutions would be called universities of technology in future, Asmal said in Pretoria. However, they would retain their distinct focus.

The University of SA would retain its name after its merger with Technikon SA and Vista University's Distance Education Campus. This was one of the mergers to become effective from January 1.

Among the amalgamations scheduled for January 2005 was that of the University of Port Elizabeth with the Port Elizabeth Technikon - to be known as the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Asmal said.
