One wonders if they will ever get approval from the APA? Right now the only DL program that has that accreditation is the Fielding Institute. The APA is a highly conservative institution however. I remember when Fielding received APA accreditation it was heralded as a move that would eventually extend to other DL institutions. However, that has not panned out. One can only hope that the future will bring more open-mindedness from them.

Capella University Earns National Program Approval for Counseling Program:
Advancing the field of counselor education by providing quality education and training online.

    Minneapolis, October 13, 2003 -
Capella University's mental health counseling master's specialization is the first and only fully online mental health counseling program to receive CACREP accreditation in the United States. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the specialized accrediting body of the American Counseling Association, approved this specialization on October 6, 2003.

"This is significant for our learners and for our University, it demonstrates that Capella University has met the rigorous standards for which CACREP is known," said Dr. Michael Offerman, president of Capella University.

The accreditation review process required an extensive examination of the curriculum, and two site visits by CACREP trained program evaluators. Capella faced the challenge of translating the standards, initially created for traditional land-based programs, into an online learning environment.

The online format of Capella's program allows working adults to pursue a degree at their convenience with a community of peers and faculty experts. "CACREP accreditation is the gold standard in the field of mental health counseling," said Dr. Pamela Patrick, executive director of Capella's School of Human Services and a professional counselor. "With this accreditation, Capella has demonstrated that the online delivery system can be used to provide complete, high quality learning experiences to prepare mental health counselors."

I know that their continuing education courses are APA approved, and have been so since 2000.

As far as I've heard, Capella appears on track of becoming the only online APA accredited institution two years from now.

I hope Capella's graduate psychology programs do become APA accredited. It would be a feather in the cap of distance learning programs! Next step, ABA approved DL law schools.

Capella Retooled Clinical and Counseling Psych to line up with APA

    Very cool on the CACREP

Just a note on the prospect of APA and Capella Psych. Earlier this year they modified their Clinical and Counseling Ph.D. programs to align them more closely with current APA requirements (the most obvious of the changes: increasing the quarter unit requirement from 120 units to 145).

Wow. I am so excited to hear they got CACREP accredited. Of course the problem is lots of on campus time and residencies to do as a result. That is what makes it tough to get a counseling degree this route. Wish I could do it.
