You may need something quite a bit more thorough. Therefore, go here for materials. Also, these folks have excellent study materials. Good luck!

...I'm trying to help my wife find study materials for her upcoming DANTES test. I've done a search on this form, but can't find any specific suggestions for study materials. Any ideas?

I sat for this about a month ago...

I used a _A Clinician's Guide to Substance Abuse_, David E. Smith and Richard B. Seymour

I used the index to reference the topics covered on the exam, covering about 120 pages or so out of 320.

Unfortunately, the exam was almost exclusively devoted to pharmacology (including some maths about dosage I could only guess at) and psychopharmacology. Almost nothing about addiction treatment, save its emergency treatments.

Not that I worried about results - but I would have enjoyed better mastery that a better review would have prepared me for.

Looking at it now, _A Handbook on Drug and Alcohol Abuse: The Biomedical Aspects_, by Gail Winger, et al. would have served me much better. (See "table of contents.") It's a slim 200+ pages that covers the exam material rather closely, I think.

The exam also had two or three questions about steroid use and/or abuse.

P.S. Frankly, other than aiding drug-making or consumption, I don't see what point the exam material had!

Does the test change? If not I have a 157 page study guide on psycho-pharmacology that includes sample tests I would be glad to loan to your wife, Mark. Let me know. You can email me or send me a PM.

I have to come clean here and admit that I got 100% on the fact sheet sample questions right off the bat. I guess my misspent youth wasn't totally, uh, wasted.

Alexa - I've saved your site to my favorites and hope to start using it soon. As I start through this maze of testing I'll be happy to add my research for testing materials if they fit the bill for study. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to help others here. This was the kind of fellowship-in- suffering I was looking for when I came here a few weeks back.

I scored a 59 by entering the topics in the google and studying some of the links that came up.

As a nurse, however, I have a good familiarity with drugs and their effects on the body, so I'm sure this cut down on my learning curve. Fort Gordon, where I'm stationed, lists the average scores for each exam every fiscal year - this test doesn't have a high "pass" rate - believe it or not.

I found it to be moderately challenging...but very doable!
