OMIGAWD! What HAVE I bitten off here? My UoL stuff came today. These guys aren't kidding. There is no way, NO way, I'll be ready for the exams next summer; fortunately the registration period is FIVE years and I'm going to need it ALL!

The subject guides look really good. The school provides heavy duty on-line resources, too. The sample exams look a LOT like law school exams in the U.S. except that they seem to place more stress on citing authorities.

Well, no social life for ME for a while!

You should be a judge. Then you can make it up as you go.

Uh, we'll pray for you. There's nothing quite like the dull stare moment in distance learning...
Seriously, all best wishes. I'm glad the programme is substantial and hope it's not overwhelming once you get your bearings.

    Nosborne,

Mine arrived as well. Fortunately, I responded to the smelling salts again.

The course is definitely the most demanding I have ever undertaken and is a test of endurance. My endurance was tested a little bit further with the theft of my computer from my house with my law notes.

The computer was on its last legs but the law notes were a bit of a loss. I will answer any questions on criminology when I come to it with a definite view! The offender may be a desperate Uni of London Student seeking some better notes, if so, he dipped out there as well.

Still a new computer, new notes, and onwards. I would be interested to hear your progress. It would be interesting to know what the differences in the law between the US and the Uk are at the moment, whether they are superficial or substantial. It might make a difference for those in the US who are seeking a knowledge of the law.
I have land law, torts, and constitutional law to battle this upcoming year. I found the differences between UK law and Australian law to be minimal, mainly procedural in criminal law.

    regards,
    ebbwvale

Dose anyone on here know if an LLB or an LLM from U of L would qualify someone to practice law in Ontario?

Expect to have to take one or two years at a Canadian law school.

    Here is the general information.

Ontario may have some specific rules also.

Nosborne....while I feel some sympathy towards you, I am also gratified to find out that the University of London does indeed require very high academic standards.

Best of luck with your LL.M program!

    Nosborne,

My University of London materials also arrived recently; I'm starting my 3rd year in the M.Sc. in epidemiology. It looks like it will be a busy year!

Best wishes with your LLM. I've been very pleased with the quality of the epidemiology materials, and I hope you will be happy with your program as well.

The "dull stare" moment. I like that. It describes the moment perfectly.

I've looked at the prior year examination papers. Oddly, the Admiralty Law exams look much more "American" than the criminal stuff.

Anyway, I'm going to be buying literally dozens of books over the next few years. I am creating a small "office" in a corner of my home. This is going to require major organization.

    Nosborne,

BTW how are you finding the student support at U of L?

I have a friend that's doing his MBA at U of London and his constantly complaining about the lack of student support. He says that sometime the tutors take over a month to reply to his e-mail questions.:(

I don't know what to think about that complaint; my understanding is that the University offers NO "tuition" to LL.M. external students. If you can't do it on your own with their materials and your textbooks, you are encouraged to seek tuition from any of a number of on-line providers but NONE of them are connected with the University.

I don't know about their MBA program.

Is this for one course or for the whole course program? Just wondering.

The LL.M. program is significantly shorter than any other London D/L Master's degree program. I will take four three-hour essay examination papers; that's all there is as far as the school is concerned. I must be "in residence" (on the books) for at least two years and not more than five years.

The LL.M. is essentially an additional year of legal study, very similar to but evaluated more severely than the LL.B.
