I would like to know from others who are currently or past teachers in California… What is the likelihood of getting hired as a middle or high school teacher; teaching in the area of math or science?

I heard a lot of talk about how “we need math and science teachers” and how those subjects are in high demand. However, I have also heard how teachers (especially in LAUSD) are getting riffed. I have extraordinary teaching abilities and know I can make a huge impact to the children I can potentially reach… However one of my biggest concerns is if I will be able to have a stable position in the CA educational industry.

I understand there is a huge amount of red-tape, and there are many blood sucking creatures in the educational realm (politics); that doesn’t concern me so much. I’m just concerned that if I finish graduate school that I have this degree but no means of making a living with it in the intended industry.

NOTE: I don’t need to know which program offer the credential; I have already done my research and have a good idea where I would go to get my credential w/ a Masters. I simply want to know feedback from those in CA who either:

    1) Experienced an unfortunate riff

    2) Are in the education field and can provide their experience.

    3) Have any stats to help forecast how the educational field may be in the next 2-3 years.

I am generally optimist about the future. But I have learned that it’s better to plan out your avenue rather than to step in and find out that you made a huge mistake. I’m sure most of you understand what I’m talking about.
