I'm wondering how this degree has helped people? What are your goals or what goals have you achieved by earning this degree? Did it open any doors for you?

I'm working on an EdD mostly out of interest. I am fascinated by the subject matter and look forward each day to the reading and writing involved. It is also a personal goal I have had for a long time to earn a doctorate.

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that a doctorate in education will result in much financial benefit. There is of course the automatic pay raise for K-12 teachers, but that could be accomplished with an EdS degree. There is a better chance of landing an administrative job with a doctorate, but that is not a given. There is the possibility of teaching for a college or university, but the competition is fairly tough in that arena. I personally will try to at least pick up some adjunct work to pay myself back for the expense although my final expense will not be much over $10K counting the pay raise and tax breaks.

I can easily imagine an EdD being useful in the corporate world. In my company there are MANY people who are involved in training others in all sorts of things and, of course, someone has to be in charge of all those trainers.

I'm doing one in International Higher Education through Northeastern. I chose an EdD because I work in administration in higher education currently, and because my goal is to set up my own distance learning institution.

I have convinced myself I need to get it to be successful. I am not sure when it happened.
I will spend a day convinced I can stop on my Ed.S. and be fine. Who cares? I have the license/certification I need and I DO NOT need to spend the money or take the time to get a stinking Ed.D.
The next day I cannot believe that I ever considered stopping.
I also worry I might be addicted to school.
    Seriously...

I am in the same boat. I just switched to the EdS program at LU. I've been back and forth almost daily about whether or not I want to finish the EdD. I've considered quitting with the EdS. I've considered quitting altogether. I've considering going straight through the EdS to the EdD. I've considered just doing the EdD.

I suppose it is partially due to my love-hate relationship with research.

interesting answers. I've always wondered this question too...I always thought unless you want to be a professor are a doctor, why else would you go that far. I guess the prestige also gets some ppl too.

I started a Ph.D. at one institution, had a transfer to a different state and finished with an Ed.D. at a different institution. Since my career is in higher education, the doctorate has made a definite difference in salary, ability to teach graduate courses, participate on dissertation committees, develop my university's first Ph.D. program and in the way that I am treated by colleagues.

It was definitely a worthwhile investment in my case and I have not noticed any disadvantages to having an Ed.D., rather than a Ph.D.

The GI Bill, K-12 pay raise, and my own personal satisfaction all played a part in my motivation.

I just caught this thread.....if you have any residencies in Boston, feel free to ask for any local insider information on hotels, restaurants, etc., and I'd love to buy you a beer/coffee while you're in my neck of the woods.

A doctorate in Education advances the career of one. It does not only give new points of view to a student in this degree, but it shows that one cares that he will not stop with what he has learned. Obtaining a doctorate in education can open doors as it can make one qualified to teach in the masters and doctorate program.
