Is there a school that offers the teaching credential online for people with a 4-year degree? My wife is looking to get a single subject credential for middle school english and I'm wondering if someone out in the degreeinfo world would be able to help.

Her degree is from Cal State Bakersfield in Liberal Arts with an English minor. We now live in Texas.

    Thanks,
    joel

You can check out this place. I know nothing about them and am not endorsing them. I just found it by a google search:
Online Texas Teacher Certification Program | Teaching Certificates

You probably want to check with local community colleges. I know the one I teach for has an alternative certification program. Some school districts have their own (such as Pasadena ISD in the Houston area). Of course, this is a lousy time to be trying to break into the teaching business in Texas public schools. Schools are facing budget shortfalls and few are adding teachers. Not that there are not some jobs out there, but not as many as a few years ago.

Here is a listing of SBEC (Texas) approved alternative certification programs (university, region service center, and private based):

    </title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset="> <meta name="robots" content="index,follow"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="0"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Cache-Control" CONTENT="no-cac

The alternative certification process use to be a full 1-year university based program (Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions) for the individual seeking alternative certification; the candidate was required to complete 12-graduate hours (1-course in education like planning and instruction assessment and 3-courses in the potential teachers content area) while being employed as the teacher of record (TOR) in a public or public charter school district, or Texas Education Agency (TEA) approved private /parochial school (e.g., teaching internship). However, I believe the paid TOR requirement is no longer the only route to teacher alternative certification (e.g., fewer current teaching employment opportunities in Texas). The internship teaching requirement, I believe, can now be accomplished via an optional 12-week Clinical Teaching – unpaid position.

Moreover before a Texas teaching certification is issued, the applicant must first take /pass the TExES PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities) to receive a 1-year probationary teaching certification. Additionally, the TExES content area of teaching specialization test must be passed before a 5-year Standard certification will be issued.

You may want to take a look at this site (iTeach Texas) for an online option; I’m certain there are others:

iTeach Texas | iteachTEXAS | Leader in Educator Certification | Teacher Certification | Certification Testing

In that you live in Fort Worth, that’s ESC Region 11 and all Education Service Centers offer alternative certification programs (e.g., The ESC 11 Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) is another alternative certification program option:
    Certification / Teacher Certification

The plus-side to seeking a teaching position as a new alternative certification teacher; will payroll cost the district less (e.g., zero years experience as to teacher pay scale). Moreover, your wife might consider pursuing a certification specific to science, math or special education. These areas are in MUCH more demand (sometimes considered a critical shortages) than say English (?).
