If your friend lives in California then the new Cal State Ed.Ds should be affordable.

Prescott has a Ph.D. in education - tuition around $8500 per term so not cheap.

If she doesn't mind an Evangelical Christian school, Liberty University has a reasonably priced EdD in Teaching and Learning. It's sixty credit-hours, $425 per credit-hour, for a total of $25,500. However, they say that those with an EdS degree may be exempt from up to half, so if they consider your friend's second Master's similarly, s/he may be about to do their EdD with just thirty credit-hours for just $12,250.

Do you have a more specific web address for that program? I go through their distance learning pages and I can find their Bachelor's and Master's degree programs but no mention of a distance doctorate.

I've sent email inquiries to the folks at University of Wyoming about the possibility of a distance ed EdD but have never received a reply.

Regarding New Mexico State University, I just inquired within the last few days, and here's what I found out. They start a distance learning PhD cohort every two years, and the application deadline for the one that will be starting in summer 2008 was January 15, 2008. Although I received an application packet, I didn't have time to submit it before the deadline. The program requires the GRE. I wasn't able to determine from the web site exactly what the tuition would be for out-of-state students, and I also was unable to determine if they offer a distance-only EdS. There is (was -- I can't seem to locate it again) such a program listed on the web site, but the person I spoke with about the PhD program seemed to imply that the distance PhD replaced (or absorbed) the EdS. I have a pending email inquiry to the person who was listed as the EdS contact on the web site, but I haven't heard back.

The PhD program requires summer residencies. Here is the web site: http://vrc.nmsu.edu/distance/degrees/details.cfm?id=20

Ooops, correction on New Mexico State -- their PhD program does not require the GRE.

At one point I expected to apply for the NMSU program. I like their focus on social issues and instructional technology, and the program is designed to fit into NMSU's policy that if you take only online courses and only six credits per term or less, then you pay in state tuition -- making it less expensive than a butt-in-seat program at my local state university.

What got me, though, was that the NMSU program requires two weeks in Las Cruces in each of three consecutive summers. That essentially would mean I would have no annual leave for anything else until 2011. In the end I just couldn't ask my wife to accept that, so I took to looking elsewhere.

On the other hand, for a schoolteacher or someone else with the time, it's great, because it means that a significant percentage of the credits in the program are earned on campus rather than online, which should help when dealing with distance learning skeptics.

So did anyone here apply for it?

You are correct that they make no mention of a distance EdD on their distance learning page. The links are here: http://ed.uwyo.edu/Doc_studies.asp or http://ed.uwyo.edu/coed_edd.asp .

Prescott's tuition is $8,490/term which, at two terms a year, is $16,980/year, which, over the four to seven years time in program, comes out to between $67,920 and $98,860. You're right it's not cheap.

At these rates, New Mexico State University's 63-credit doctorate costs $13,494.60 for in-staters and $39,160 for out-of-staters.

The University of Wyoming's doctoral program is 80-82 hours long if you're entering without a master's degree and one can get 28-33 hours credit if one is entering with a master's degree, hence 49-52 post-master's hours. Tuition for in-staters is $164/hour while tuition for out-of-staters is $470/hour. This means that an in-stater will eventually pay between $8,036 and $13,448 (depending on whether or not he/she has a master's degree) while the out-of-stater will eventually pay between $23,030 and $38,540 (depending on whether or not he/she has a master's degree).

Texas A & M University Commerce www.tamu-commerce.edu offers a PhD in Educational Psychology which, though they don't like to refer to it as distance learning, does have significant online and summer courses, which they do acknowledge can be attractive to the non-traditional learner. At $195/hour for in-staters, their total tuition comes to $11,700 while out-of-staters pay $473/hour, or $28,380 for the whole program.

Texas Tech University offers a distance learning EdD in Agricultural Education which at $380/hour for in-staters and $541/hour for out-of-staters, comes to $24,320 and $34,624, respectively, for the entire program.

Another possibility, if your friend doesn't mind or maybe even likes Christian schools, and also hailing from the great state of Virginia is Regent University www.regent.edu . They offer the distance EdD in Adult Education, Character Education, Christian Education Leadership, Distance Education, Educational Psychology, Higher Education, K-12 School Leadership, and Special Education. At $720/hour, their program comes to $43,200.

The program is set up to take advantage of the state's 6-units and under rule that allows out-of-state students to take up to 6 units a term and pay in-state rates. When I was looking at the program, I inquired about the summer sessions where 12-15 units were attempted online and in-person. They told me that it would be billed in such a way as to allow me (who lives in California) to still pay in-state rates. The only substantial cost that you have to consider is the cost of transportation and lodging during the summer sessions.

The University of Alabama www.ua.edu offers both the EdD in Higher Education Administration and the PhD in Instructional Leadership. The EdD is $6100 a term over six terms for a total of $36,600 while the PhD is $278/hour x 72 hrs. = $20,016.
