There are a lot of EdD's popping up recently. I wonder if it is because there is a bigger market for such degrees due to teachers improving their education in an attempt to avoid lay-offs.

I think the reason you're seeing a lot of EdD's in the area of Higher Education Administration pop up is because a large portion of the people in high level admin roles at universities are nearing retirement age so its a field that has a lot of growth potential. I think the EdD helps a lot when applying for the higher level admin jobs in academia. I plan to finish my EdM in 2 years then enroll in a EdD in distance format (my dream is the UPenn program or GWU, but for costs sake I will likely try for the University of Florida).

    As an aside...

When was the last time a person's first post was so useful? Three cheers for you!

The program actually requires a week of residence every summer while you are taking coursework.

I was in the process of applying to this program before I decided to shift toward K-12 education.

More than you might think. In fact I thought you might like to know that I knew of this program because of your suggestion, and that since then I've applied, been admitted, and have definitively decided to enroll in it. Thanks!

Greetings, fellow Tiger! I'll be taking teacher licensure coursework at Memphis starting in the spring!

Awesome! Since you have an MA, do you think you may want to go the doctoral route yourself? Most of the incoming students in the program are in the Memphis area, so you'd be in good company.

I'm going to do the Master of Arts in Teaching, most likely. The doctoral programs don't lead to licensure in K-12. I have no desire to remain in higher ed, and that's why I withdrew my application for the EdD program earlier in the year.
