Can anyone tell me if this DL University is any good? I think is not related to teh FairFax University previously discussed on this forum. They claim (I am investigating) that they joint ventures with ISC2 (Of CISSP certification Fame) in order to develop a curriculum that will make sense for future Information Security Professionals (http://www.universityoffairfax.net/about/news). Their curriculum seems to be comparable with others regarding Information Security. My question is, Is this University for real or it is just another mill? Please advise. Thanks.

This is a new school. Their Ph.D. program in about 50K and do not offer distance learning. They are seeking accreditation from a recognized agency (this takes time). I do not think they are a degree mill.

Why do you say that? Simply because it is not accredited?

Everything I see on their site leads me to believe this is a legitimate, innovative start-up school which is likely in the process of obtaining accreditation.

I'm not saying that I would recommend that someone attend this school before it is accredited, but, to me, it certainly does not appear to be a mill.

University of Fairfax may not be a degree mill. It is licensed in the state of Virginia and I believe that the owners are currently seeking a legitimate and recognized accreditation. I commented about the school here.

The homepage of State Council of Higher Education for Virginia is here. If you scroll down, you will find that University of Fairfax is listed just before University of Richmond.

As for state licensing I would like to point you to exibit b http://www.kw.edu/academic_integrity.asp?active=about2 which states that kennedy western university

This professional recognition also owes to the fact that the University is licensed through the Wyoming State Department of Education, under W.S. 21-2-401 through 21-2-407. Such oversight requires Kennedy-Western to meet the standards as indicated within Article 4: Private School Licensing. All applicable Wyoming State statutes on licensing can be accessed at: www.k12.wy.us/higher_ed/statutes.html. The following excerpt offers an example of the standards Kennedy-Western must adhere to:

In addition, verification must be provided that not less than fifty percent of the instructors employed by the institution have received a masters or doctorate degree in their respective field of study from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

    21-2-404. Prohibited Practices

so given that I would say fairfax has similair traits of a degree mill
and maybe in fact a degree mill who knows at this point I guess there is only one way to find out and Im not going to enroll to find out. I rather wait a year to see if they get there regional ,national or detc accredittation if they do then They are not a degree mill if they dont then we will see . In any case 50,000 as was listed previous post is to much experiment with . You can get the same degree from norwich for half the amount more prestige 1(87 years old ) backed and created by the nsa ,united states millitary and creators of cissp certification.

Please note that University of Fairfax in Virginia is not the same as Fairfax University that used to rent a mailbox in Louisiana. Fairfax University, which is listed in ODA web site, has "relocated" several times in the past to avoid being penalized. It has used mailbox addresses in Montana, S.Dakota, and the U.K.

    Washington Post article

Anyone that is interested in attending the University of Fairfax should take a look at an article in the Washington Post:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43952-2003Dec7.html

concerning past schools that the President Victor Berlin operated.

Apparently "he was an owner of a school (in Maryland) that precipitously closed, leaving 370 students enrolled and having paid millions of dollars for training they were unable to complete"

The University of Fairfax is for real. No, they are not fully accredited...yet, but they are on their way. I've known of the school since its' inception in 2003 and the faculty and students have worked hard to make this university one that offers what many others did not at the time. Yes, there are some who paint the school as a diploma mill but I encourage anyone to honestly look at what they offer and compare to some of the more established schools. Just because a school is accredited does not mean they offer the best option. I am NOT saying that accreditation doesn't matter; I'm saying they are a new school that is still in the process of achieving accreditation. Look before you leap! I attended one of their ISC2 CISSP prep seminars and it is everything they advertise it to be. If you were to ask, I'm sure they could produce the proof you seek.

    Welcome to the forum.

It has been eight years. How "on their way" are they?

Well if the school is the same University of Fairfax that is an applicant with DETC, they could be close:

Distance Education and Training Council: Applicant Schools

Then again the only other school on the new applicants list is Trinity Newburgh, which of course has a pretty rocky accreditation history of its own. So, it certain seems possible that University of Fairfax will be accredited soon, but not assured.

    Shush.

The question was for the new guy who dug up an eight year old thread to defend Fairfax's awesomeness with his post.

8 years is a long time to be "on the way"

Eight years is a long time, but I'm not sure how long they've been a DETC applicant. That would be a better measure of how long it's taking. Virginia isn't an "accreditation or bust" state, so they may not have felt that artificial pressure to seek accreditation until they were ready.

    University of Fairfax Accreditation

The University of Fairfax successfully earned accreditation from the national accrediting agency DETC on January 20th, 2012. While the process was long, it was not longer than usual, and accreditation requires a certain number of graduating classes before the application can even be submitted. We welcome questions and more information can be found on our website at University of Fairfax - Information Security Graduate Degree.
