    Greetings!

I just found this forum today, and am making a first post.

I have been researching a Ph.D. in Business, specializing in IT Management. I already have an MBA and teach part-time, at night, in the Master's program at National University in California. During the day I'm an IT nerd at a large utility company.

Before I embark on an expensive decision, I thought I would ask for opinions...Do you see any Ph.D.s at work in business (not just education)? If so, what kinds of positions do you see them in? There are only one or two Ph.D.s in my company that I know of, and they're hidden away in high-tech positions, away from people they might actually have to talk to. :)

I am considering Capella University's online program. While I believe I will have some obstacles to overcome with the perceptions of an online degree's value, I believe it's a good program and will focus on areas that my company is very interested in. Does anyone have any experience with Capella, or information about their program?

Thanks so much for your input!!!

    Deana,
I have received good comments about Capella's programs from people who have "attended" the university. Based on what I have learned from this site, I would not have a problem using Capella (I'm currently looking for a graduate school). Also, I find the people who have never attended an online class the most critical of online education. I imagine their perspectives would change if they would take an online class. Online education is here to stay and, based on the studies I've read, just as viable as "butt in class" programs. Good luck with your search!

I'd be sure to also check out Nova Southeastern's programs. They have one in the business school www.sbe.nova.edu and one in the school of computer science.

I have been looking for a (Regionally Accredited + AACSB Accredited) United States based distant PHD in Business with Information Technology concentration, for about the last 9 months. I couldn't find one. However there are some distant schools that are regionally accredited only and do the PHD in Business:

    1. www.ncu.edu (Northcentral University) - I decided to try this school out because it had a Regionally accredited doctorate (PHD) in business with a Management Information Systems (MIS) concentration. I start around the 1st of Sept. (2003). The tuition is reasonable (about 15K, but verify this). Also, it can be done entirely via the internet. Also you can go almost at your own pace and take as little as only 9 credits (3 classes) per year. The biggest drawback is that it isn't AACSB accredited, and I don't know if it ever will be. The did accept all 30 of my MBA credits from American Intercontinental University.

    2. Capella (not aacsb) - I looked into this school, but the tuition scared me to death. The two things that I didn't like are that it isn't aacsb accredited and they charged you the same amount of tuition every quarter no matter how many classes you took. So if you wanted to go slow and take 1 class in a quarter it would cost around $3,000.00 for that one class. The only way this program would be financially reasonable is if you had the time to take a minimum of 2 classes every quarter.

    3. www.tui.edu - Touro I looked into this school's PHD in business, but they didn't have a computer (IT, MIS, IS, Computer Science) concentration. I called the schoold and they said that there wouldn't be a designation of your concentration in your Degree. This is also not AACSB accredited.

    4. www.nsu.edu (Nova) - I looked into this but I think the residency requirements are a bit too much for me. It's not aacsb but I have heard good things about this school.

Isn't it interesting that so many posted without reading the question? ;)

So, he was considering Capella, not dead set into enrolling yet, right? Maybe these posters were just introducing him to other programs available? I went through ALMOST enrolling into several schools before I finally decided which one to go into.

    Best Regards,
    Bill
