Have any of you kindly folks who inhabit degreeinfo.com's IT discussion board taken the ICCP Software Engineering exam?
I'm preparing to take it as another step on the road toward my BS-CIS degree from Excelsior College and wondered if anyone had suggestions for good textbooks or study resources to help one prepare for this exam.

At the moment, I am reading "Software Engineering - 6th Edition" by Ian Sommerville and have purchased the Bird Review and Q&A Drills for SE. I'm also considering buying and using Schaum's Outline of Software Engineering for practice questions.

    Thanks in advance,
    calidris

How was the exam? I need to take the following ICCP exams:

    Data Resource Mgmt
    Data Communications
    Systems Development

Any guidance you can provide for these exams is appreciated. What texts do you recommend? What subject matter should I concentrate on?

    Thanks.

    ICCP exams

I just received my acceptance from ICCP to take the Software Engineering exam. I plan to take it before Thanksgiving but haven't scheduled it yet.

As for the other exams, if you're an Excelsior student there are posts at the Excelsior EPN website with good info about these exams. You can also try searching this site for ICCP and see what pops up. If I remember correctly there were a couple of good posts here too.

I am an Excelsior student and I have read the EPN discussion boards. If you have any additional information that would be great.

What exactly do you mean that you "just received acceptance" to take an ICCP exam? Is this a lengthy process? As stated, I need to take 3 ICCP exams, and I would like to have these completed by Januaryish. I have not yet made contact with ICCP, but I have commenced preparing for these exams. What kind of lag time should I expect from the time I indicate to ICCP that I want to take an exam, until the time I can actually take it? Was it difficult to locate a test proctor for the exam? I have been told that some of the local public librarians can function as test proctors. Any advice on this?

    Thanks,

    ICCP exams

I've found it takes about 2 weeks between the day I mail the ICCP an application to take an exam with a personal check as payment and the date I receive their acceptance back in the mail.

The application does not have a place on it to designate a proctor or schedule the exam so I've done that after I receive the ICCP acceptance. I've used the same proctor for the last 3 ICCP exams I've taken (before this year, Excelsior offered the ICCP exams thru Prometic testing centers). I usually contact the ICCP by email to designate my proctor and set the date for the exam. As I understand it from my proctor, the ICCP contacts him and confirms that he is available on the test date I've requested before confirming the test date back to me via email. This usually takes a couple of days.

You could send in 1 application for all the exams you want to take to shorten the time lag. You have 90 days from the day the ICCP processes your application to take your exams. Extensions are available but cost something. I'm not in a rush to complete my degree. So I prefer to work on 1 exam at a time and only send in my application when I'm ready to take the exam.

I had left postings at the old Excelsior EPN site concerning 2 of the exams your planning to take:
    Systems Development
    Communications
I don't know if Excelsior migrated these posting to the new EPN site but will check later today. If not, I'll see if I have copies and if I do, repost them when I have some time.

Thanks for the info. I believe your posts on EPN are still there. I think at one time, I cross referenced some of your other posts here to find your name and then matched that name to the posts on the EPN network, or something. But I do, recall making a connection between you and the EPN site.

    Thanks.

    ICCP exams

I checked yesterday and my old postings are on the new Excelsior EPN site.

I'll do my best to try and help you if you have additional questions about the exams I've taken (short of the exact questions on each exam, of course).

    Good luck with your exams.

    ICCP Exams

I'm glad to see your posts regarding ICCP exams. I'm thinking of taking either of the three:
    1. Systems Development
    2. Software Engineering
    3. Data Resource Management

Which one do you think is more appropriate at the moment? I'm a CCP holder and would like to add at least 1 more proficiency certificate.

By the way, in the US/Canada, how valuable is the CCP? Are there CCP holders in the UK?

This is a question to all:

How many exams are required for CCP and ICCP ? are there enough ICCP exams in Excelsior BSCIS degree program to satisfy ICCP certification requirements as well ?

    Taken from the ICCP site:
    http://www.iccp.org/iccpnew/ccp.html

What exams must you take to earn a CCP designation?

To earn the CCP designation, you must pass the Core exam and two specialty exams at 70% or higher. You can substitute two language exams for one of the specialty exams, or you can substitute one of a number of valid, current, acceptable vendor certifications for a $45 USD prior learning assessment and processing fee. See list below.

Core I.T. Skills and Knowledge (mandatory exam)

    The specialty exams are:

    1. I.T. Management
    2. Procedural Programming (Structured Programming)
    3. Systems Development
    4. Business Information Systems
    5. Internetworking & Communications
    6. Object Oriented Analysis and Design
    7. Office Information Systems
    8. Systems Programming
    9. Software Engineering
    10.Systems Security
    11.Data Resource Management
    12.Microcomputing and Networks

The language exams offered are Pascal, BASIC, Visual Basic, RPG/400, COBOL, C and C++.

I did came across any other requirements other than passing ICCP exams for getting CCP on their website. Is it correct that there is no degree requirement to get CCP title? one has to pass the required exams only ?

That's right, you only need to have four years of professional level work experience and pass the 3 exams at professional level (70% or higher). However, the 4 years requirement may be reduced if you already have a relevant degree. The most important is adherence to ICCP's professional code of ethics, conduct and good practice.

Additionally, don't forget that a CCP holder must maintain an equivalent of 120 contact hours of study/courses/training/article writing/book writing and other acceptable professional activities each three-year period in order to retain the CCP title.

The CIPS requires a total of 300 contact hours each 3-year period to maintain the I.S.P. designation.

    Quite challenging....

    Passed ICCP Software Engineering

I passed the ICCP Software Engineering exam last night. Overall I'd say it was a typical ICCP exam, very broad in scope but not requiring knowledge of any great depth in any particular area. Given my lack of familiarity with the topic and the lenghty exam outline, I required an additional month of preparation (for a total of 4 months) before I felt confident that I could pass the exam.

Here's a list of the study resources I used, listed (IMHO) in order of decreasing utility:
    1. ICCP Prep Text Vol VI: Software Engineering
    2. Software Engineering by Pressman w/web site
    3. Schaum's Outline: Software Engineering by Gustafson
    4. Software Engineering by Ian Sommervile
    5. Intro to OOA: Objects in Plain English by David Brown
    6. Bird Review and CDROM Drills for Software Engineering

As usual, I strongly recommend parsing the full ICCP Exam Outline for this exam carefully and using the web to research any topics you're not familiar with. Then try taking the 27 question practice exam under test conditions when you think you are ready for the real thing as a way to gauge you're readiness for the actual exam. You might also try taking the ICCP practice exams for System Development and Procedural Programming/Programming Fundamentals as the Software Engineering exam covers these topic to a decent extent.

    Re: Passed ICCP Software Engineering

Congratulations! That's right, the ICCP exams tests your soft skills of the subject areas covered, i.e. the underlying concepts of the related activities we do at the work place. Unlike the Vendor-specific exams that you have to know exactly what is defined in the user/operating manuals.

I might take the SE too, just got the Text book from ICCP few days back.

    Congratulations once again.

Thanks, and good luck with your exam. If I can be of any assistance (short of giving you the actual questions on the exam) post your question here as I check this site reqularly.

I must say that I really enjoyed studying for the ICCP SE exam as this is the area in CS that I'm most interested in at the moment. In addition I feel that the techniques I studied are not used as effectively as they could be in the industry in which I work (financial services).

This is the 6th ICCP exam I've taken as I'm using these exams to complete a BS-CIS at Excelsior College so the exam was not a surprise to me. I'll probably take a few more (OOAD, JAVA, Core?) even though they're not reqired for my degree because preparing for the exams help me focus better on the material.

    Re: Your ICCP Study Guides

How much ICCP study materials do you have? Let me know, I am interested in taking some of the ICCP specialty tests; they are what I am looking for; will negotiate with you to buy them from you at a fair price. I could also use passed tests to accelerate my degree plan with UMUC!

Holler back at [email protected]. Thanks!
