I will be enrolling in the BS/CIS program at Excelsior very soon and I am presently studying for CLEP exams with 3 scheduled for next week. I have a couple of questions and hoped someone could shed some light.

    1) I visited the BA in 4 Weeks website and want to verify that the CLEP-English Composition Exam with Essay is still accepted at Excelsior? I suspect it's not since I couldn't find any information at Excelsior's website.

    2) Since Excelsior assigns corresponding grades to CLEP scores what scores should I target if I intend to pursue a MBA?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

    1) No the CLEP test is not accepted as fulfilling the Eng. Comp. Requirement. They require EC Exam or transfered courses.

    2) At this point, EC only assigns letter grades to some CLEP tests although the wording suggest they will at some point assign letter grades for all of them. The list the CLEP tests that currently assign letter grades on the EC site. I target 80% correct in raw score on the tests I've taken. I believe Lawrie suggests a lower target as a minimum. If nothing else read every inch of Lawrie's and EC's web sites. Also read through old posts on AED and check out the free university web site.

    3) Good luck in both the tests and the degree program!

Thanks for the quick reply. Believe me I have become very familiar with Lawrie's website.

BTW. This is a great discussion forum! Current and archived postings have provided a wealth of information.

If it is I would like to know how. I am 90 percent there after 8 weeks. I had alot of credits coming in. But their new requirements, Discrete Math and Data Structures, do not have tests. You will wind up taking courses at TESC or trying to find a school that will let you challenge.

    This makes it go slower.

I just finished what I hope is my last class for the Excelsior CIS degree. It's been a long process for me due to being in the military and on the go all time (US Navy-stationed aboard ship). I've done a combination of classroom, distance learning and testing (not to mention my military credits -21 years of service) to amass 216 credit hours. Best of luck.

I think BA in 4 Weeks makes it clear that the CLEP English Composition with Essay is NOT an option for Excelsior students. That has been the case since September 1997. The guides are replete with references to the non acceptance of this exam (by Excelsior) and that it is not an option for Excelsior students. I've listed a few examples below. Perhaps I need to be clearer still.

BA in 4 Weeks - Enrollment
"For example, in 1997, Regents (Excelsior) changed its requirement for English Composition, and after September of that year would no longer accept the CLEP exam taken after that date, and submitted by students enrolled after that date."

BA in 4 Weeks - Synopsis
"NB- ECE English Composition required in the case of Excelsior College, not CLEP English with Essay. "

BA in 4 Weeks - First Year

    "CLEP GENERAL EXAMS

    1. Do the general CLEP exams. If enrolled in Excelsior College, substitute the ECE exam "English Composition" for the CLEP "English Composition with Essay".

    2. There are five CLEP general exams . . . Excelsior students should substitute ECE "English composition" as noted above.

    3. The five exams can be completed in two days of testing. The exams are:

    · English Composition with Essay*

    . . .

*or ECE English Composition for Excelsior students

    4. If you have the choice (i.e. not an Excelsior student), avoid ECE English Composition and go with the CLEP English composition with Essay,
    "

To be certain of a place, target a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours of the undergraduate degree. That is a B average.

    Re: BS/CIS in 4 weeks

    No.

Unlike the other degrees in this series, the BS in Computer Information Systems is designed for practicing professionals and really does require a deal of hands on experience, in my view, if the exams are to be negotiated successfully.

The CIS degree requires 120 semester hours, of which, at least 45 hours must be in CIS. If completing the entire degree via examination*, the ICCP exams comprise an essential component of the degree CIS core. Vendor exams (Microsoft, Novell, Comp TIA), are only accepted in the applied/professional component. One or two college proficiency exams can be used to fulfill requirements in the core.

The good news is that those with a broad (though not necessarily, deep) professional experience/ knowledge base, in the sub disciplines encountered in core, should have little difficulty in passing these exams. The vendor exams however, do require very specific knowledge, but many, set on completing this degree, will already be CNE or MCSE. Those who are not, may want to consider incorporating these certifications into their proposed degree structure in a sort of 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 "happy meal" approach, comprising college degree, and assorted professional certifications.

*I note Upstate's comments about the new requirements. Haven't looked at that yet.

FWIW, it wouldn't surprise me if someone completed Excelsior's BS in business with the Management Information Systems specialization in four weeks. The core courses are all business-related and exams are readily available.

BS-CIS from Excelsior - credit for Learning Tree course

Excelsior now accepts courses taken from Learning Tree that have been approved by ACE for credit for credit towards their BS-CIS degree. I suspect that other vendor's courses that have been approved by ACE can also be applied towards a degree.
