Apparently, Revature is partnering with a lot of colleges, but you don't need to be a student at one of the partner colleges in order to go through one of their free coding boot camps. I checked out the application, and it's very simple despite them saying that they are very selective. Based on my research on the website and of employee reviews, Revature sends you to their boot camp in Virginia. You get a $250 travel stipend to get to the boot camp, a living stipend of $150 a week, and free housing that you will likely share with four other people. After that, you are required to work for Revature for two years, or you'll owe them $20,000. Revature is pretty much an outsourcing company. You'll work on projects that come from contracts with other companies. If you aren't on a project, you won't get paid. Anyone can sign up for the free, online courses, but those are pretty much junk.
Uhmmm... I do not have an accounting degree, but that does not sound free. Just because there is no cash, or student loan taken out to pay for the education, there is still a debt created to Revature in the approximate amount of $20,000, right? So, how is this free?
I agree with you. It's not free, and they don't make this known when you're applying on the website. I don't know how far into the hiring process (because you really are interviewing for a job) they tell you about the $20,000. Similarly, these pay-as-you-go schools are usually not debt-free as they advertise. A lot of times, the monthly payments are not enough to keep you out of debt to the school. The students have to continue paying, even after they finish the program.
