It's new for them, maybe, and that's great and newsworthy, but it's not new in general. COSC gave me credit for my Microsoft certification over a decade ago. And the IT Masters programs from Charles Sturt University in Australia have been based on this idea all along.
I think Brandman University has better reputation than Western Governors University due to affiliation of Chapman University.
They're all schools that few people have really heard of. Perfectly good, absolutely, but not like, "Whoooooa, you went to Brandman!"
I kind of like having a generic/anonymous undergrad alma mater. "You graduated from Kuh-Ree College?" "No, no, you Neanderthal, Kuh-RAY College" :wink:
