I'm a little surprised that no one responded to our new friend prax but his post caught my attention because of his mention of Karnataka. But first thing first. Prax, my answer to your question depends on your answer to one or two questions. The first is, will a non-Indian degree somehow give you a better shot at your career goals? The second is, can you afford a non-Indian degree? If the answer to these questions is no then you might want to stick with something close to home. As for your question, "how is Karnataka?" I think that you might be in a better position than me is answering that. In the very few minutes I spent on their site they seem to be a legitimate, state-sanctioned open university. I have not taken the time to cross-check their "accreditation" so I will withhold final jusdgement.

*Note to members - this seems to be another in a series of Indian universities that offer a range of DL degrees on multiple levels and for an incredibly cheap price. To my knowledge, none of our members have enrolled in any of these schools so we have no first hand accounts of these schools. I'd love it if someone would report on any of these schools.

    Hi Prax,

Among the best (at least in terms of university name) would be the Georgia Tech Online Master of Science in Computer Science program. It's supposedly $7000 which is extraordinarily inexpensive by American standards.

If we're talking about Karnataka State Open University, it's legitimate and perfectly serviceable but not particularly remarkable.

    Hi Prax,

AFAIK, there was a UGC directive to universities to STOP OFFERING B.Tech and M.Tech degrees by distance education, till they figure out the modailities. I have not seen any updates or changes regarding this.

I know some "Study Centers" still voraciously marketing these degrees, but their legitimacy can not be determined. You may better off contacting the University directly and verify if they are and authorized to offer these courses in an online format.

    Hi Prax

If you are in INDIA, I would suggest doing MS from BITS-Pilani( A reputed Institute). They do conduct distance Education.
