Okay, i have been doing a TON of research and i have decided i want to finally pursue my degree in Information Technology. I really need some help finding a decent affordable online school for IT that is accredited ABET accredited as well for a Bachelors. I am a military spouse in case it helps. Attending an actual school in person is not an option since me and my husband are over seas and no schools are made available for the current time we will be here. At the moment am stuck with Capella. Any schools in mind?

A TON? C'mon. It only took me two minutes to find out that most ABET accredited programs are not online. From their page:
"The vast majority of ABET-accredited programs are offered mostly on-site."

Here's the page of all those that are: ABET - Online Programs .

Your choice: Capella or Regis. So it's Regis, I'm guessing...

Out of curiosity, why do you think you need ABET accreditation for a program in IT?

ABET accreditation is generally considered optional for computer science/IT programs. Many well-known schools don't have it.

It;s true that ABET accreditation is generally considered important in engineering -- but CS/IT is a different ball game. In fact, the ABET accreditation is different as well: it's technically ABET/EAC for engineering and ABET/CAC for CS/IT.

It's common for schools to have ABET accreditation for engineering (where it matters), but not for CS/IT (where it doesn't). Harvard and Stanford are examples.

As noted above, the only online CS/IT options with ABET accreditation appear to be Capella and Regis. If you consider ABET as optional (like most people in the CS/IT field) then there will be far more options.

There's a guy in my building who drives a nice Mercedes. He thinks it's afordable. I'm still driving my old Jeep because, to me, it's affordable. When you say that you want a program that's "affordable" it's not really clear what you mean. The cheapest program on the planet? Something in the middle? In any case, here's one,

If you are in the CS/IT you do not require to get ABET accredited program due to the fact that you're not taking State's engineering license. The cheapest one at the current is Western Governors University (if complete within 2 years). Otherwise, Fort Hays State University is the cheapest one. Also, check out the big Three as well.

Thank you all, i was told by some that ABET is a plus for IT, obviously i am new to this field that is why i am asking in this thread to more knowledgeable folks that have a deeper more understanding about IT to get guidance. I was not aware that ABET had to be onsite since i noticed Capella is ABET accredited. I just want to get the best out of my education when it comes to accreditation to the competitive job market out there, also when i said affordable i meant reasonable. a degree in a field can go up to 50,000 or more and then there are some schools that offer the same quality education for a more reasonable price is what i meant to say just using an example. Thank you again for all the feedback i really appreciate it.

What about Southern New Hampshire University, they are non profit they are also regionally accredited and offer the degree online. any thoughts on this school do employers consider their degrees?

Also, i am new to IT and i was told by some that having a degree for IT with an accredited ABET institution is a plus, i did not know that ABET is only for onsite since i noticed Capella was ABET accredited. obviously am not too knowledgeable about the field and hope to learn a thing or two while looking for an online university from more knowledgeable people that are in the field such as yourselves whom have a deeper understanding of it. When i said affordable i meant to say reasonable and not overpriced. There are universities that offer the same degree with an excellent quality of education for a much more reasonable price is what i meant. Since some universities are way overpriced for certain degrees. I am now looking at non profit i thank you for the feedback as it is very helpful and useful in my search. I am not sure exactly how much a BS in IT should normally cost someone.

    Thanks everyone for your help!

i apologize in advance for some this may be a dumb question but is there any specific accreditation an IT degree program should have before considering it as long as the school is regionally accredited is good enough or is there any other accreditation one should worry about the school having?

I also found Colorado State University Global campus it is non-profit and they even offer a 10% discount for military spouses which sounds great to me. Have you guys heard of this school? Any thoughts?

ABET is not only for onsite programs. There aren't many online, ABET-accredited programs because schools mostly seek ABET accreditation for engineering programs, and that's a hands on field.

You want affordable? (And good, of course.) Now we're clear of that ABET stuff, here are two suggestions. They are both schools that charge by the semester. The harder you work (more courses per semester) the cheaper it gets.

    (1) CIE - World College. This school is DETC (Nationally) accredited, not RA - but it has a good reputation, is exceptionally inexpensive and I have known people who have done very well with these degrees. In IT it often seems what you know, your skill-set, and your certifications are more important than where you got your degree.

World College Distance Learning Bachelors Degrees Electronics

    (2) Western Governors University. A lot of happy campers here. They just celebrated the enrolment of their 25,000th distance-ed student. This school is RA. A student here earns quite a few important industry certifications on the way to a Bachelor's. Again, the more courses you can pass in a semester, the more you save.

No, there isn't. Regional accreditation alone is fine for IT programs.

Thanks so much for clarifying this for me.

Thank you for all the helpful information, i believe WGU requires an internship but where i am located it will be difficult to probably unlikely to find an internship made available to me since am overseas specially when i spoke to their enrollment counselor. I did consider them them though i have heard nothing but good news from this school but am limited due to the internship since without it i can not continue to graduate, i also need experience in IT to attend with them and as i mentioned am new to the field and never worked in IT before.

also what are your thoughts on CTU-Global campus? as well as southern new Hampshire university they are both non profit and regionally accredited.

Liberty University is a Non-Profit Regionally Accredited school with an awesome B&M campus and plays NCAA D1 sports this includes football. For Active Military and Veterans its 250 dollars a credit hour. This discount also applies to spouses of Active Military and Veterans. I would look at schools that can offer you a discount. If you want to go into massive amounts of debt wait till your Masters. Even then I wouldn't advise that approach. Here is my linkedin profile Christopher Curtis | LinkedIn I have been in IT for awhile and was military myself so I know a little about the IT field. I have a very successful career and am thankful. I'm sure lots of folks on here have so all this advise is sound.

Also CTU is a For-Profit not a Non-Profit. I was considering SNHU for my Masters but was using the old GI Bill and the price was way higher than LU, so LU won.

Liberty University does distance learning well. It's worth noting, however, that it's a strongly evangelical Christian institution, which may not be everyone's cup of tea.

No - CTU is a for-profit school. I believe it's quite expensive ($60K) and I've heard mixed reviews. This article might be useful to you:

Colorado Technical University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sorry - I don't know anything about Southern New Hampshire -except that, as you say, it's RA and non-profit. I seem to remember good things being said about it in this forum. Check the search-gadget.

BTW - I checked CTU's tuition schedule, here. I don't see an online IT degree. Nearest they have is Health Informatics. Strange....thought they did have IT. All Bach. degrees same price - $58,500. I'm sure you can do better for less money.

Are you sure you mean CTU Global Campus?

She might mean CSU Global Campus. CTU doesn't use the term "global campus." Colorado State University does have an IT program.
