I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from a very reputed institute in India. This course is equivalent to a 4 year B.S. degree from an accredited university in US. I have 10 years of work experience primarily in the Enterprise Integration domain. All of these years I have been doing system design, programming and related stuff.

I want pursue graduation in a relevant and somewhat technical program which will broaden my perspective and also enhance my resume. My employer will not pay for education, so I will be paying it out of my pocket. I am looking for an accredited online program which can fit my budget (total cost should not be more than $15-17K). Since I will be working full time, I can spend about 10-12 hours per week for study.
I am confused regarding my options. I did some reading on degreeinfo and geteducated sites. MSIS programs from Dakota State University and University of Illinois at Springfield look nice. They have good accreditation, very economical and the programs can be completed completely online.

My question is, does it make sense to complete one of these programs with your own money? Considering I already have BS in computer science with 10 year work experience, will these program give me enough knowledge worth the money and time? Any other options are also welcome.

I think you would probably get more bang for your buck with a MBA or maybe the MSCS from UIS. It is also very reasonable and would fall more in line with your background and education vs. the MIS program. I completed the MIS program and think highly of it, but a lot of the material overlapped what I saw in undergrad studies and I can't help but to think that it would be the same for you. It's been a great asset for me in my transition from a technical role to a more analytical one, but if you're looking to stay on the technical side the MSCS would likely carry more weight.

Hi dicurious, I appreciate your response.

After I went through MIS@UIS coursework, I thought the same thing about some overlapping. I have already studied some of the courses which are part of these programs.

However, based on the experience with my BS degree, my concern with MSCS is, it will be very theoretical without much practical applicability. In my BS program I studied couple of subjects like Digital Signal Processing or Computer Graphics, which were of no practical value in last 10 years of my career. I am not sure if studying Turing Machine or Computer Organization now will really benefit me in real professional life. On the contrary MIS covers things like Change Management, Project Management, Social issues of information systems etc, which I find somewhat relevant to day-to-day life of any IT person.

I know I might be completely wrong and confused in my perception about these programs. Do you have any suggestions about good online MBA program? I don't see UIS offers it.
