    Hello all

My wife is currently enrolled in a BS in Information Technology. She now plans to change degree path to a BS in Information Systems Security. I am worried that by moving to such a "specialized" program she is grossly limiting the utility of even having a college degree. Her argument is she wants to do cyber security for a living and this degree gets her closer. I don't agree because as far as I know that world places a lot more emphasis on certifications, verifiable abilities, and background than it does on degrees. So essentially I feel she would be doing this degree in hopes of it doing something that it cannot and that she would be better suited to at least find a job in the field with a more general degree than the specialized degree that she now wants.

    Anyone have any inputs? Thanks.

I agree with you, she should stay in the Information Technology or Computer Science. Maybe with concentration in Information Security, and getting many top Information Security Certifications as she can. Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker, Certified Forensic Investigator, Certified System Auditor...those are more valuable.

However with a degree in Information Security along would limit her in the Information Technology field.
