Nowadays, mostly requires a Bachelor degree for job in Information Technology (System Admistrator, System Engineering, Network Engineering, Cyber Security Analyst, and etc.) Most employers look for Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, and etc. I know they expect alot, but not much when you're in the job. Information Technology is great; however, land a job after graduate is a good ROI. If you have the ability to do Computer Science, then do so...especially, Information Security is a great minor under Computer Science vs. Information Technology. If you are interested in Information Security, ensure to attend the institution that NSA designation.

So you are saying that just a plain bs in information technology is not as compatative as a degree in computer science or enginnering?

Most of the times, it is your bachelor's degree that will fetch you a job, and your masters will augment your specialization in the job field. I believe this is especially true in the IT field.

That is why I want to go for a bachelors. There are no computer science or software engineering around here and to be honest the curriculum don't look nearly as interested as the above one for it.

Ya looks pretty decent, but would have to move there. Is there anyone in this forum that has a bs in information technology that can give me his point of view?

Have you gone to job boards and looked for jobs that you think you might want to pursue? Do that, and have a look at the job requirements, that will be a good indicator as to what undergrad you should pursue.

I went to FHSU for their undergrad in INT (Information Networking & Telecommuncations). Great program with various concentrations. From a programming point of view, I wish I would have done a CS degree, but if you're into infosec, then by all means, go for that... infosec isn't going anywhere - on the contrary, it's growing considering where technology is heading.

You have to move where? The purpose of Online/Distance learning, so students can reside anywhere in the World. I am living and working in Northern Virginia, but I am attending Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for my Ph.D in Information Systems w/ Information Security.

Oh I see you type the via learning, sorry. Ya I looked into a few computer science degrees but to be honest I like the classes better from the information technology degree at usf. Sound like I would enjoy them alot and the school is only couple miles away from me, so no need to due it online. I don't mind if I don't land a job right after graduation since I'm working on an A.a.s in Engineering technology and looking for a solidwork certificate very soon.

IT degrees tend to be more practical and interesting then comp sci degrees in general which are more theoretical and math related. But that's why it is regarded higher in employers eyes, because most know it to be tougher. Same reason why employers value an IT degree higher from an ivy league vs a 3rd tier school.
This is just a norm though...there will always be exceptions.
