I am torn between both disciplines, got accepted to Depaul University. Love human computer interaction because it incorporates design and tech
however my background has been in software engineering and that would make a nice masters

I want to do more usability work

Should I go for the masters in HCI or should I go for the software engineering taking usability electives? please help out guys thanks

information systems but a lot of web software development I have found that I am interested more in design than development and database although i can do both

If you are more interested in design, I really don't see the reason for going the software engineering route. The HCI track is a better choice. It has design elements, without being too "fluffy". The SE degree would seem to pull you into the exact opposite direction that it seems you want your career to go.

Also, DePaul is an excellent choice. I have a bunch of friends that did their CS undergrad and/or grad work at DePaul.

the reason I am considering the engineer masters is it includes user interface design as electives and I also have a background in development

I was looking for some help. I am planning to apply for MS in Human computer Interaction for Fall 2013. I have recently graduated with my major in Electrical Engineering. My undergrad gpa is 8.02/10. I have scored a 317 in my gre and 108 in toefl. I do not have a strong background in this field, I know basic c++ programming that was taught at college and post graduation have been learning html, css ,javascript. I also have a very basic understanding of photoshop.I have no research experience or work experience in this area. Can you help me figure out if i have any chances of getting through good colleges for MS in HCI ? or that it will be tough with my background? Are good programming skills exceedingly necessary for this field as i have been reading that people from diverse backgrounds take this field. Thanks for giving your time.
