As the title says I am looking for MIS/CIS bachelor degree programs. I am a hardware/tech support type with nearly 2 decades in electronics/computer support and 12 of those strictly in IT. The VA (Ch 31, Voc Rehab) is paying for it, so cost is not an issue. Any suggestions appreciated. I have looked at WGU, Park University, Bellevue, and UMUC, any others? (I am not a programmer. I know how to do it and the fundamental basics, but it does not come easy to me, so hevay programming is right out.) Thanks.
Have you looked at this thread: http://www.degreeinfo.com/computer-related-degrees/40097-master-list-b-m-colleges-offering-online-degrees.html? Most of the schools listed also offer some form of IT BS degree - check it out.
Here are a few other options that I came across when I was researching programs about a year ago. (Some of the info, especially tuition figures, may have changed since then.) Fort Hays State University Master of Liberal Studies (Informatics) [concentration in Management Information Systems] 31 credits , $7,114 MLS Concentration in Management Information Systems - Fort Hays State University University of Illinois Springfield Master of Science in Management Information Systems 36 credits , $13,725 MIS: Degree Requirements National University Master of Science in Management Information Systems 54 quarter units , $18,900 National University • Master of Science in Management Information Systems Nova Southeastern University Master of Management Information Systems (MMIS) 36 credits , $19,800 Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences
Do you already have an AA and/or any certs? If so, you might already be a significant portion of the way towards an MIS/CIS at TESC/EC/COSC.
I would strongly consider FSU's MS MIS which is very reasonable for out of state students. Costs / Admissions / Management Information Systems (MS-MIS) / Master's Degrees / Graduate Degrees / Academic Programs / College of Business / FSU - College of Business Its about $20K and 24 months. You also sample MBA courses in the program which is nice if you want to learn more about business.
I did the UIS MS-MIS program and can highly recommend it. Otherwise, FSU's program that ryoder posted looks good. Looks like tuition is getting ready to go up by about 4k though for OOS students.
What is your learning style? Are you the "Give me the book, a study outline, and tell me when the test is" type, or do you need more personal interaction with your instructor to learn the material? That would affect what schools I recomend. In general, for other techies (I've been in IT for almost 12 years now) that need a bachelor's degree, I recommend WGU, Thomas Edison State College, Excelsior, or Charter Oak State College. Most techies that I know are more independent learners who are used to studying on their own to pass things like certification exams. The structure of the 4 schools I mentioned above is a lot like taking a series of certification exams (in fact, many of your existing certs may count for credit), so it is already very familiar to techies. I love degreeinfo, at the same time I would be doing you a severe disservice if I didn't mention another forum, techexams.net. Their IT Jobs/Degrees sub-forum is an excellent place to talk with other tech folks that are doing, or have done, the same thing you want to. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to post them on this board, techexams, or pm me if you want.
