So our cat hit a key on my wife's DELL Inspiron 6000 laptop. Now, only a public wifi option comes up. Usually the wireless connection list includes our home wireless network, and a few networks that are close to our area.

Here is the error message coming after she clicks repair this connection, this error message up:

Windows cannot finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed; TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection, cannot proceed.

Please advise ASAP, she has a work project she has to complete this weekend, and the program is only installed on her laptop, she if she cannot sign in, she cannot open her work/job program.

    It would be MUCH appreciated!

I am not an IT guy at all but I have a bonehead suggestion. When that happened to me, I plugged in an Ethernet cable between my laptop and my modem. It worked until I could fix my WiFi.

Depending on the version of Windows you're using and assuming that's all that's wrong with the connection.

Go to the network control panel and right-click on the wireless connection.
Select properties from the context menu that appears.
There should be a list of protocols and options that can be enabled and disabled. Scroll down.

TCP/IP should be in that list without a checkmark if it's disabled. Check it.
    Apply, OK.

    For best results reboot.

    ITJD,

Thanks so much for your valuable time. I did what you said to do above (rebooted as well), and the TCP/IP boxes are checked . HOWEVER, when I hit repair this comes up:

    Repair 1394 connection
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed. Cannot proceed.
*For assistance, contact the person who manages your network.

Do you have any idea why it is saying it is connected, but then when I hit repair it say it is not connected. You help is really appreciated.

    Thanks,

Question 1: What version of Windows are you running?
Question 2: Even though the wireless connection says it's not working, are you able to get to websites regardless?

Next, since you said your cat hit a button, try Fn F5 or whatever button combination toggles your wireless antenna off and on. I've seen that error when the antenna is turned off, and when TCPIP.sys is corrupted. Two possible outcomes couldn't be further apart in complexity so the message itself doesn't help much.

    2. No, websites will not come up.

I tried the fn keys as per your instructions, however, I was unsuccessful.

    Thanks,

    I think it's Fn - F2 on that model.

    Abner,

Can you get to the internet using a wired connection?

I know you can appreciate the difficulty in troubleshooting blind but take a look at the following information:

[SOLVED] dell inspiron 6000 wireless problem(moved from hardware) - Tech Support Forum

If your wi-fi light is on and your wi-fi is working then try to reinstall your network on the PC. If your router is not broadcasting the SSID you won't see it and you will have lost the wi-fi configuration to your router if your configuration changed.

As a last resort and assuming that the wrong set of keys were selected to really disturb your configuration you can restore your computer to a previous point in time (but might lose some information, updates etc...):

I concur that the only way a cat stepping on a keyboard could disable your wi-fi is if it simultaneously stepped on Fn and F2 at the same time. Undo whatever you did in options and put it back (it doesn't sound like you cat was clicking around in your system connections properties :) ) how it was before. Then try simultaneously pushing Fn and F2. There may be a lighted indicator (my laptop does at least near the touchpad) showing your wi-fi is enabled.

Left rear paw on Fn, left front paw on F2. . . totally possible. :)

Knowing Kiki, she probably did it to mess with me. She is sneaky. Let's just say, we keep the laptop closed when we are not home.
