Thread: Carnegie Mellon MSc Information Security & Assurance

First let me introduce myself, I came here by a reference from TechExams.net forums, I have 5+ yrs of experience, primarily in UNIX. I have BSc Computer Engineering , and I have some industry certifications (RHCE, Solaris 10 certs,..etc).


I've been reading and searching this forum for a couple of weeks, and I'm really impressed, excellent information!!


I would like to see if anyone here have any experience this program:

I would like to know how smooth the distance learning experience with program is?

Not one reply? Wow...sorry about that UnixGuy but I guess nobody has experience with this program specifically. That said you can't find a better school for the subject matter.

Tuition is ridiculous for the content, which has got to be part of the reason why. There are cheaper alternatives and tech hiring managers generally don't discriminate as widely in favor of name brand schools.

However, CMU is fantastic if you can swing it.

I agree. It's a great brand but who can afford the price?

I was actually reading their info the other day and was impressed. Then I saw the price and was so shocked I closed the tab immediately. Its unbelievably expensive.

These graduate degrees from Carnegie Mellon really only make sense if you're already working for a large company & they pay for you. I remember looking at their software engineering program & it's set up in a way where a group of employees/students is "sponsored" by an organization & contracted for a project.

That said though, you would be hard pressed to find a more rigorous/respected degree through DL and B&M alike.

I agree that it would be respected but how do you know that it is rigorous?

At the point where it is respected rigor becomes far less important. It's rare anyone learns anything career changing in school, which is why experience is so important.

I can't tell you who grateful I am with the information you guys have given me :) Well, as far as the cost is concerned, I'm trying to get the best degree possible (reputation wise and quality wise), all while working full time. Because, like many of you guys, I just can't afford studying full time. I agree, the degree costs roughly 58K$, that's a lot of money. I have a wide experience in IT, so I think I don't have a problem with self-study, In fact all I do is self-study anyway...



To be honest, I'm in a kind of in a dilemma. My final goal is to be able to do a PhD almost through DL ( I don't mind flying 1.5 months a year). I would like to do that in one of the UK reputable universities, and I know it's difficult. I thought of first getting MSc to make my application stronger. However, from my reading so far, I understand that for a PhD, one needs research experience, and the Msc from CMU above doesn't have dissertation, so perhaps I'm better with an Msc that has dissertation?

What do you think guys? I'm thinking of doing MSc through the University of London International program:

My thoughts is that It's kind of more recognized in the UK, and would get me in touch with possible researchers. (I found a guy on LinkedIn who did MSc through the University of London, and now is doing PhD almost DL at the university of london).

You will have no issues with a Degree from University of London International program. If you think that satisfies your needs, go ahead and enroll. A lot of Universities do offer part-time PhD's in UK. With a UOL degree, you should not have any issues. That is just my opinion.

The program is great, I viewed all the courses and the contents of almost every course, it's excellent! I will go for it, I found plenty of people on Linked In who are doing PhD part-time, I think I'll just do the master then go from there. Thank you :)
